Histone proteins, which could interact with DNA, play important roles in the regulation of chromatin structures, transcription, and other DNA-based biological processes. Here, we developed a novel aptamer-based probe for the analysis of histone H4-aptamer interfaces. This probe contains a DNA sequence for specific recognition of histone H4, a biotin tag for affinity enrichment, an aryl azide photoactive group for cross-linking and a cleavable disulfide group to dissociate aptamer from labeled histones.

This work presents a fully integrated graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) biosensor for the label-free detection of lead ions (Pb) in aqueous-media, which first implements the G-quadruplex structure-switching biosensing principle in graphene nanoelectronics. We experimentally illustrate the biomolecular interplay that G-rich DNA single-strands with one-end confined on graphene surface can specifically interact with Pb ions and switch into G-quadruplex structures. Since the structure-switching of electrically charged DNA strands can disrupt the charge distribution in the vicinity of graphene surface, the carrier equilibrium in graphene sheet might be altered, and manifested by the conductivity variation of GFET.

Herein, we demonstrate a plasmonic ELISA based on the alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-mediated growth of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for the sensitive, rapid, and naked-eye detection of cancer biomarkers in clinical serum samples. This approach was used to measure the low-abundance alpha fetal protein (AFP) in clinical sera, which demonstrates its great capability in the differentiation of cancers and evaluation of therapeutic responses. Impressively, the readout of the plasmonic assay depends on the rapid formation of Ag colloidal solutions with various degrees of yellow color, which can be distinguished by the naked eye, without the need for sophisticated platforms.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how nutritional support affects clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients at nutritional risk, comparing those following guideline standards to those who do not.
  • A total of 525 patients were monitored, revealing that those receiving guideline-compliant nutritional support had lower rates of infectious complications compared to those who did not (17.1% vs. 26.9%).
  • The findings suggest that nutritional support, particularly a combination of parenteral and enteral nutrition for 7 or more days, reduces infection risk and should be recommended for at-risk patients, but more research is needed to validate these results.

Aims/hypothesis: In women, higher parity has been associated with increased risk of diabetes later in life. It is unclear, however, whether this association is mainly due to biological effects of childbearing, or to socioeconomic and lifestyle factors associated with childrearing. We assessed the association between number of children and diabetes risk separately in women and men.

Glycosyltransferases (GTs) play a critical role in the enzymatic and chemoenzymatic synthesis of oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. However, the development of these synthetic approaches has been limited by a lack of sensitive screening methods for the isolation of novel natural GTs or their active variants. Herein, we describe the results of our investigation towards the soluble expression and potential application of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae apyrase YND1.
