Article Synopsis
  • - Levels of progesterone increase after ovulation and are vital for supporting pregnancy, but gut microbiota can influence these levels by affecting the hormone's recycling in the liver and gut.
  • - A specific gut bacterium plays a key role in metabolizing progesterone into a neurosteroid, which does not have progestogenic activity; researchers identified the enzyme responsible for this conversion.
  • - In experiments with female mice, certain antibiotics helped restore progesterone levels, and prolonged antibiotic use disrupted ovarian follicle development, suggesting a link between gut bacteria and progesterone resistance in women.

Article Synopsis
  • Exposure to the Russian-Ukrainian War led to severe mental health issues among residents from 11 countries, with Ukrainians experiencing the worst effects.
  • The study identified factors like previous mental disorders and perceived stress as common predictors of PTSD and CPTSD, while some unique factors, such as gender and relationship status, also played a role.
  • Findings emphasize the importance of mental health support for populations affected by ongoing conflict, especially given the uncertain threat of war in many areas.

Background/objectives: The complex association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and methylphenidate (MPH) with precocious puberty (PP) is still unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between ADHD, MPH, and PP.

Methods: This is a nationwide cohort study including a total of 3,342,077 individuals, 186,681 with ADHD and 3,155,396 without.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked into the health effects of being born by cesarean section (CS) in Taiwan, as many babies are born this way.
  • It found that children born by CS had a higher chance of developing problems like asthma, allergies, and being overweight compared to those born naturally.
  • The results suggest that cesarean deliveries might be linked to these health issues, especially obesity, but food allergies weren't affected.

Objective: In this population-based cohort study, we compared the risks of incident hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, and strabismus between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and children without ASD.

Methods: This study included children who were born in Taiwan at any time between 2004 and 2017. Data were collected from the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the effect of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) on the right inferior frontal gyrus (RIFG) to reduce autistic symptoms in a clinical trial with 60 intellectually able autistic participants aged 8-30.
  • - Results showed that while autistic symptoms decreased in both the active and sham groups, there were no significant differences between them; however, the active group exhibited improvements in social cognition compared to the sham group.
  • - The conclusion indicates that, despite the lack of overall benefit in reducing autistic symptoms or emotion dysregulation, iTBS might enhance certain aspects of social cognition, specifically in understanding others' feelings.

Scarce clinical trials involving autistic people with intellectual disability (ID) and minimally speaking (MS) status have been a substantial unmet research need in the field. Although earlier studies have demonstrated the feasibility and beneficial potentials of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in intellectually able autistic people, the feasibility and tolerability of applying rTMS in autistic people with ID/MS has never been studied. We conducted the world-first 4-week randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled pilot trial to investigate the feasibility, tolerability, and safety of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS, a variant of excitatory rTMS) over the left DLPFC in autistic youth with ID/MS.

Background: The ongoing global crisis of Higher Education (HE) institutions during the post-COVID-19 pandemic period has increased the likelihood of enduring psychological stressors for staff. This study aimed to identify factors associated with job insecurity, burnout, psychological distress and coping amongst staff working at HE institutions globally.

Methods: An anonymous cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023 with staff at HE institutions across 16 countries.

Limited knowledge is available about the association between autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and precocious puberty. Our study examined the association between the two medical conditions and effect modification by sex and neuropsychiatric comorbidities in a nationwide population. To compare the risk of precocious puberty between ASD and non-ASD cases, we conducted a Cox regression analysis using ASD as the exposure and time to precocious puberty as the outcome.

Prenatal antidepressant exposure has been reported to be associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, yet studies considering confounding factors in Asian populations are lacking. This study utilized a nationwide data base in Taiwan, enrolling all liveborn children registered in the National Health Insurance system between 2004 and 2016. Subjects were divided into two groups: antidepressant-exposed (n = 55,707)) and antidepressant-unexposed group (n = 2,245,689).

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the impact of time spent on war-related news on psychological distress, such as depression and PTSD, among people in Poland and Ukraine, with a focus on how rumination influences these effects.
  • It involved 1438 internet users and utilized structural equation modeling and regression analysis to assess the relationships between news consumption, rumination, and mental health outcomes.
  • Key findings indicate that rumination mediates the relationship between news consumption and psychological distress, with different sources of news (TV and internet) influencing rumination and PTSD symptoms differently in Poland.

The link between inflammatory disorders, such as asthma, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is attracting increasing attention but few studies have examined cross-generational associations. We sought to examine associations of maternal asthma and asthma exacerbation during pregnancy, as well as paternal asthma, with the risk of ADHD in children. This population-based cohort study used data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from 2004 to 2017.

Objectives: The majority of female immigrants who are married in Taiwan often face a variety of stresses, which may lead to physical or mental illness. Yet few studies have validated the impact of length of residency on physical and mental health using large-scale data. This study combined five nationwide databases and explored the impact of length of residency in Taiwan on the physical and mental health of female marriage immigrants.

Purpose: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may be associated with increased mortality, but relevant findings have been inconsistent. The modifying effects of gender and intellectual disability on excess mortality in individuals with ASD are underexplored.

Patients And Methods: Using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database and the National Death Registry, this population-based cohort study selected the data of 75,946 patients with ASD (ASD cohort) and 75,946 age group-, gender-, and income-matched (1:1) patients without ASD (non-ASD cohort).

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the higher risk of physical health issues in people newly diagnosed with schizophrenia compared to the general population.
  • Researchers analyzed data from Taiwan's health database over 17 years, focusing on 1,910 patients aged 10-40 with schizophrenia and 7,640 matched controls.
  • Findings revealed that many patients developed serious physical conditions, particularly within the first year, with risks for diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and especially cerebrovascular disease persisting or increasing over time.

Objective: Symptomatic overlap between dissociation and psychosis is well documented; however, the pathogenesis of these two phenomena might be distinct. Few studies have analyzed the relation of dissociative and psychotic symptoms transdiagnostically. The current study examines an emerging trauma-dissociation theoretical model that accounts for psychotic symptoms across affective disorders and schizophrenia (SCZ).
