Background: Diarrhea is a common complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and is associated with substantial morbidity, but its etiology is often unknown. Etiologies of diarrhea in this population include infectious causes, chemotherapy- or medication-induced mucosal injury and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Distinguishing these potential causes of diarrhea is challenging since diarrheal symptoms are often multifactorial, and the etiologies often overlap in transplant patients.

Background: Keloid subepidermal vascular network flaps (KSVNFs) have achieved satisfactory results in clinical practice. Through this retrospective study, we further examined keloid vascular structure to better understand vascular origin pattern in KSVNFs.

Methods: Paraffin-embedded keloid tissues were stained for CD31.

Background: There is no article that studies whether the regional lymph node (RLN) status affects the prognosis of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC).

Methods: The survival and disease data of MCC patients were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiological, and End Results (SEER) database. The overall survival (OS) and cause-specific survival (CSS) rates were endpoints.

Certain members of the TRIM family have been shown to have abnormal expression and prognostic value in cancer. However, in the development and progression of melanoma, the role of different TRIM family members remains unknown. To address this issue, this study used the Oncomine, UCSC, Human Protein Atlas, DAVID, and GEPIA databases to study the role of TRIMs in the prognosis of melanoma.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how well the POSSUM and P-POSSUM scoring systems predict the risk of complications and death in elderly patients undergoing liver and pancreas surgeries.
  • In a review of 274 patients, the predicted complication rates by POSSUM were somewhat accurate, with a prediction of 22.57% compared to an actual rate of 17.88%. However, the predicted mortality rate of 4.61% was significantly higher than the actual 1.09%.
  • The findings suggest that while POSSUM effectively predicts complications, it tends to overestimate mortality risk in this patient group, with higher scores indicating more complications and deaths.

Article Synopsis
  • Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) primarily affects elderly patients, particularly those over 70, but predicting their prognosis has challenges.
  • A study analyzed data from 1,973 MCC patients aged 65 and older to identify key survival factors, finding significant correlations with N stage, M stage, liver metastasis, and lymph node surgery outcomes.
  • Results indicate that lymph node surgery improves patient outcomes and highlight liver metastasis as a significant indicator of poor prognosis, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring and surgical intervention in elderly patients.

To describe the factors affecting distant metastasis of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) and the prognosis of metastatic MCC. The MCC patient information was downloaded from the SEER database. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard models were conducted to screen for significant factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Liver resection can offer a chance for cure in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT), but the long-term survival rate is low, with only 11.7% surviving three years post-surgery.
  • The study analyzed data from 1590 patients to identify factors affecting long-term survival, finding that higher bilirubin levels, tumor size, and other clinical factors significantly predicted outcomes.
  • Only 1 in 9 patients survived over three years, suggesting that strategies like controlling blood loss and ensuring complete tumor resection (R0) are crucial for improving survival rates in these patients.

Background: Several randomized controlled trials comparing platelet-rich plasma to standard wound care for chronic wounds have been published. Previous articles have revealed that the role of platelet-rich plasma in promoting chronic wound healing is uncertain. This quantitative meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate whether superior outcomes can be obtained by using platelet-rich plasma in nonhealing ulcers compared with traditional wound care.

Background: Lipoabdominoplasty is a powerful operation to maintain a youthful physique for aging people, improve body contouring, and remove excess skin caused by massive weight loss. Nonetheless, it is controversial to combine abdominoplasty and liposuction because of the potential for vascular damage of the abdominal flap and increased complications. The purpose of this article was to determine the complication rates of lipoabdominoplasty compared with traditional abdominoplasty.
