Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to assess the prevalence of subthreshold depression among Chinese college students, revealing a significant rate of approximately 39.7% among 8,934 participants.
  • Factors such as being female, having chronic illnesses, experiencing financial debt, facing challenges in family communication, and feeling high perceived pressure were linked to a higher risk of developing subthreshold depression.
  • The research suggests that strong family communication, better perceived social support, and higher self-efficacy may serve as protective factors against subthreshold depression, highlighting the importance of timely screening for at-risk students.

Purpose: To examine the association between ambient air pollution and dry eye symptoms (DES) during the COVID-19 pandemic and explore whether air pollution had increased the risk of DES to a greater extent than other risk factors.

Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted from June 20, 2022 to August 31, 2022. The Ocular Surface Disease Index-6 (OSDI-6) questionnaire was used to assess the presence of DES.

Lung cancer is the main cause of cancer deaths around the world. Nitrosamine 4-(methyl nitrosamine)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) is a tobacco-specific carcinogen of lung cancer. Abundant evidence implicates long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in tumorigenesis.

Plant-associated microbiomes play important roles in plant health and productivity. However, despite fruits being directly linked to plant productivity, little is known about the microbiomes of fruits and their potential association with fruit health. Here, by integrating 16S rRNA gene, ITS high-throughput sequencing data, and microbiological culturable approaches, we reported that roots and fruits (pods) of peanut, a typical plant that bears fruits underground, recruit different bacterial and fungal communities independently of cropping conditions and that the incidence of pod disease under monocropping conditions is attributed to the depletion of Bacillus genus and enrichment of Aspergillus genus in geocarposphere.

Objectives: To develop the EQ-5D-5L (5L) population norms for China and to assess the relationship between various factors and 5L data.

Methods: This study used data derived from the Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents, a national sample survey of 21 909 representative participants aged 12 years and above. Participants' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was measured by the 5L.

Aims: To assess the impact of dry eye symptoms (DESs) on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among Chinese residents.

Methods: A total of 21 916 participants were involved in this nationwide cross-sectional study. All of them completed the Ocular Surface Disease Index-6 and the five-level European Quality of Life 5-Dimensional (EQ-5D) Questionnaire to assess the severity of DES and HRQOL, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • RNF187 is an E3 enzyme that promotes cancer cell proliferation, but its role in germline cell development was previously unclear.
  • Research using a mouse-derived GC-2 cell line showed that RNF187 enhances cell viability, proliferation, and migration by interacting with histone H3.
  • The study identifies RNF187's involvement in the ubiquitination of histone H3 at specific lysine residues (K57 and K80), leading to increased gene transcription, suggesting its importance in germ cell development and opening avenues for further research.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study highlights the significant role of the long non-coding RNA NRSN2-AS1, which is found to be over-expressed in ovarian cancer tissues and is linked to the progression of the disease in women.
  • - NRSN2-AS1 promotes the growth and spread of ovarian cancer cells by stabilizing the protein PTK2 and activating the β-catenin signaling pathway while inhibiting its degradation by MG-53.
  • - The findings suggest that targeting the NRSN2-AS1/PTK2/β-catenin signaling axis could have potential clinical applications for treating ovarian cancer, marking a novel discovery in understanding the disease's mechanisms.

Article Synopsis
  • Enhancing health literacy is crucial for the physical and mental well-being of college students, but research on how family influences this is limited.
  • A study of 5,473 students found a strong positive relationship between family health and students' health literacy, with psychological resilience serving as a significant mediator.
  • The research suggests that families should play a key role in improving health literacy, and boosting students' psychological resilience can further benefit their overall health awareness and capabilities.

Article Synopsis
  • Nicotine dependence is a major public health issue, and this study focused on how family functioning affects nicotine dependence in smoking fathers, leveraging the McMaster model of family functioning for insights.
  • The study involved 874 fathers from Qingdao, with assessments of nicotine dependence using the Fagerstrom test and family functioning through the Family Assessment Device. Results showed varying levels of dependence among participants.
  • Findings indicated that poorer family functioning, lower education, more alcohol use, and longer smoking duration were linked to severe nicotine dependence, while starting smoking at an older age and higher education levels were associated with less severe dependence.

Objective: This study aimed to assess changes in joint range of motion (ROM) and knee joint function between patients who received the mobile health-based intervention and those who received regular care at 2 and 6 weeks after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction to provide better interventions in the future.

Methods: Patients who underwent ACL reconstruction were randomized into the experimental [Mobile health-based intervention (MHI); = 62] and control (CON) groups ( = 63). The CON group underwent home-based rehabilitation exercise following the paper rehabilitation schedule, while the intervention group received additional mobile health-based education at weeks 1-6 after surgery.

A growing body of evidence implies that gut microbiota was involved in pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the mechanism is still unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of antibiotics pretreatment on the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD mice. In this study, vancomycin pretreatment was given by gavage once daily with either vancomycin or distilled water for 14 days to mice, then mice were administered with MPTP (20 mg/kg, i.

In strong contrast to limited repair within the mammalian central nervous system, the spinal cord of adult zebrafish is capable of almost complete recovery following injury. Understanding the mechanism underlying neural repair and functional recovery in zebrafish may lead to innovative therapies for human spinal cord injury (SCI). Since neuropeptide Y (NPY) plays a protective role in the pathogenesis of several neurological diseases, in the present study, we evaluated the effects of NPY on neuronal repair and subsequent recovery of motor function in adult zebrafish following SCI.

To clarify the genetic mechanism underlying grain protein content (GPC) and to improve rice grain qualities, the mapping and cloning of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling the natural variation of GPC are very important. Based on genotyping-by-resequencing, a total of 14 QTLs were detected with the Huanghuazhan/Jizi1560 (HHZ/JZ1560) recombinant inbred line (RIL) population in 2016 and 2017. Seven of the fourteen QTLs were repeatedly identified across two years.
