Low-energy-consumption rapid synthesis of carbon dots at room temperature from combusted food waste with versatile analytical applications.

In this study, we developed a low-energy-consumption green method for synthesising carbon dots (CD) at room temperature using watermelon rind as the carbon source through a cutting process based on NaCl crystals. The synthesis process was rapid (<5 min) and facile. The synthesised CD were characterised using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Predictive Models and Impact of Interfacial Contacts and Amino Acids on Protein-Protein Binding Affinity.

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) play a central role in nearly all cellular processes. The strength of the binding in a PPI is characterized by the binding affinity (BA) and is a key factor in controlling protein-protein complex formation and defining the structure-function relationship. Despite advancements in understanding protein-protein binding, much remains unknown about the interfacial region and its association with BA.

Evolution of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Serologic Markers Among Antiretroviral-Naive Young People Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus Who Had Undergone Neonatal HBV Vaccination and Initiated Antiretroviral Therapy.

Background: With initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) containing nucleos(t)ide reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) with anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) activity, the evolution of HBV serologic markers among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) who were born in the era of nationwide neonatal HBV vaccination is rarely investigated.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the changes of HBV serologic markers (hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg], antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen [anti-HBs], and antibody to hepatitis B core antigen [anti-HBc]) of PLWH who had undergone neonatal HBV vaccination. Clinical characteristics were analyzed and the incidences of evolution of HBV serologic markers were estimated.

LC/MS-Based Global Metabolomic Identification of Serum Biomarkers Differentiating Hepatocellular Carcinoma from Chronic Hepatitis B and Liver Cirrhosis.

Chronic hepatitis B virus (CHB) infection is one of the primary risk factors associated with the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Despite having been extensively studied, diagnosing early-stage HCC remains challenging, and diagnosed patients have a poor (3-5%) survival rate. Identifying new approaches to detect changes in the serum metabolic profiles of patients with CHB and liver cirrhosis (LC) may provide a valuable approach to better detect HCC at an early stage when it is still amenable to treatment, thereby improving patient prognosis and survival.

A sonochemical assisted synthesis of hollow sphere structured tin (IV) oxide on graphene oxide sheets for the low-level detection of environmental pollutant mercury in biological samples and foodstuffs.

In modern approaches for nanomaterials synthesis, ultrasonication plays an important role in providing the larger surface area and smaller crystalline size properties that are favorable to electrochemical techniques. Herein, we report the tin (IV) oxide on graphene oxide nanoparticles were synthesized (SnO@GO NPs) by ultrasonic methodology (UZ SONOPULS HD 3400 Ultrasonic homogenizer) with the total power of 400 W and the (frequency of 20 kHz; 140 W/dm). The formation of as-prepared SnO@GO NPs and its surface morphology were scrutinized over XRD, XPS, TEM, and FESEM.

Metastatic renal cell carcinoma: the first report of unilateral fundus hemorrhage induced by sorafenib.

Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney tumor with increasing incidence. Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKIs) are considered important treatment in the management of metastatic RCC. Some previous studies demonstrated that sorafenib treatment is associated with a significantly increased risk of potentially life-threatening adverse events, like bleeding.

Clarification of mammalian cloacal morphogenesis using high-resolution episcopic microscopy.

The developmental process through which the cloaca transforms from one hollow structure to two separated urinary and digestive outlets remains controversial and speculative. Here, we use high-resolution episcopic microscopy to examine a comprehensive series of normal and mutant mouse cloaca in which the detailed 3-dimensional (3-D) morphological features are illuminated throughout the development. We provide evidence that the dorsal peri-cloacal mesenchyme (dPCM) remains stationary while other surrounding tissues grow towards it.

The construction of a hospital disease tracking and control system with a disease infection probability model.

With relatively short latency and rapid propagation, viral diseases could be transmitted through the air to medical personnel or the public during the incubation period. To reduce the possibilities of spread, this research creates an infection probability model based on the settling velocity and concentration distribution of infectious droplets. Then, radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is employed to track the travel history (time, date and place) of the infected patients.

Braided thin-walled biodegradable ureteral stent: preliminary evaluation in a canine model.

Objectives: To evaluate a novel designed degradable ureteral stent.

Methods: A total of 24 male Beagles, each with bilateral stents implanted (a biodegradable ureteral 4.5-Fr stent and a standard 4-Fr biostable stent) were divided into four groups.

The application of data mining to explore association rules between metabolic syndrome and lifestyles.

This study used an efficient data mining algorithm, called DCIP (the data cutting and inner product method), to explore association rules between the lifestyles of factory workers in Taiwan and the metabolic syndrome. A total of 1,216 workers in four companies completed a lifestyle questionnaire. Results of the questionnaire survey were integrated into the workers' health examination reports to form an attribute database of the metabolic syndrome.

Higher glucose on admission is associated with need for angioembolization in stable pelvic fracture.

Background: Angioembolization is an effective adjunct to the management of retroperitoneal hemorrhage in pelvic fractures. Most patients with stable-type pelvic fracture are treated conservatively. However, in some stable pelvic fracture cases, patients should receive angioembolization for hemostasis upon incidental finding of contrast extravasation on computed tomography (CT).

Simultaneous overexpression of Oct4 and Nanog abrogates terminal myogenesis.

Oct4 and Nanog are two embryonic stem (ES) cell-specific transcription factors that play critical roles in the maintenance of ES cell pluripotency. In this study, we investigated the effects of Oct4 and Nanog expression on the differentiation state of myogenic cells, which is sustained by a strong positive feedback loop. Oct4 and Nanog, either independently or simultaneously, were overexpressed in C2C12 myoblasts, and the expression of myogenic lineage-specific genes and terminal differentiation was observed by RT-PCR.

Homocysteine and risk of coronary artery disease: Folate is the important determinant of plasma homocysteine concentration.

Objectives: The purposes of this study were to study the effects of folate and vitamins B6 and B12 on plasma homocysteine concentration and to estimate the risks for coronary artery disease (CAD) according to quartiles of plasma homocysteine concentration.

Methods: The study was designed as a case-reference observational study. Case subjects (CAD group, n = 60) were identified by cardiac catheterization to have at least 70% stenosis of one major coronary artery; otherwise, patients were considered for a reference group (n = 60).
