Background: Although sarcopenia and frailty are important diseases in geriatrics, few studies have investigated the association between the two diseases. Thus, this study aimed to examine the relationship between two components of sarcopenia (muscle mass and muscle function) and frailty.

Methods: In total, 997 Korean older adults (456 men and 541 women) were included in this cross-sectional observational study.

Purpose: To assess the association between frailty, measured using a frailty diagnosis tool, and adverse outcomes using regular health checkup data and National Health Insurance claim data of 66-year-old Koreans.

Methods: We evaluated all Koreans born between 1942 and 1946 who received a 66-year lifetime transition period health examination and regular biennial general and cancer screenings between 2008 and 2012. These patients were observed until December 31, 2015.

Objectives: Although it is well known that nutritional deficiency influences frailty, and both nutritional status and frailty are closely related to mortality and morbidity in older people, there are no studies concerning this interaction. In this study, we evaluated whether the interaction of frailty and nutritional deficiency is additive and/or multiplicative.

Methods: We analyzed data from 8907 individuals (≥65 years old) who took part in the 2008 Survey on Health and Welfare Status of the Elderly in Korea.

Background: The optimal criteria applied to older Korean people have not been defined. We aimed to define clinically relevant cut-off points for older Korean people and to compare the predictive validity with other definitions of sarcopenia.

Methods: Nine hundred and sixteen older Koreans (≥65 years) were included in this cross-sectional observational study.

Objective: The incidence of gastric cancer in older people is increasing. Because older patients are at increased risk of postoperative complications and mortality, preoperative risk assessment in this population is important. This study explored whether preoperative assessment of frailty could be useful for predicting the postoperative outcome in patients with gastric cancer.

Background And Aim: We aimed to investigate the association between lower gait speed and cognitive decline over a 3-year period in community-dwelling older people with mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores of 30 at baseline.

Methods: The study was based on data from 10,003 Koreans aged 60 years or older who completed the National Elderly Survey in both 2008 and 2011. Among them 620 subjects achieved MMSE scores of 30 in 2008.

Background: This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of a low appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) using three cut-off points (mean ASMI-2SD of a gender-specific young reference group (aged 18-39 years), mean ASMI-1SD of a gender-specific young reference group, and the lower 20 percentile value of a gender-specific older group (aged ≥ 65 years)) in Korean older people and the relationship between ASMI and subjective health-related quality of life.

Methods: This study utilized data acquired during the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2008-2011. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry body compositional data was obtained from a subsample of 6538 subjects (men 2804, women 3734) aged 18-39 and 4413 subjects (men 1872, women 2541) aged 65 years and older.

Introduction: South Korea's low birth rate, aging society, and female migration to urban areas due to industrialization have caused an accelerated inflow of Asian female immigrants into Korea to marry Korean men, especially in rural areas. This study was performed to determine how family function of multicultural families changes over time and what factors affect the changes in family function of multicultural families.

Methods: The study subjects were 62 Asian immigrant women married to South Korean men living in South Korea.

Background: The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES) III using the circumplex model has been widely used in investigating family function. However, the criticism of the curvilinear hypothesis of the circumplex model has always been from an empirical point of view. This study examined the relationship between adolescent adaptability, cohesion, and adolescent problem behaviors, and especially testing the consistency of the curvilinear hypotheses with FACES III.
