The Indian Society of Hypertension (InSH) highlights the urgency for India-specific guidelines on hypertension management. Hypertension affects over one billion people worldwide, with India bearing a significant burden due to its population, diversity, and demographics. In India, hypertension affects 21% of women and 24% of men, while pre-hypertension affects 39% of women and 49% of men.

Identification of sequence determinants for the ABHD14 enzymes.

Over the course of evolution, enzymes have developed remarkable functional diversity in catalyzing important chemical reactions across various organisms, and understanding how new enzyme functions might have evolved remains an important question in modern enzymology. To systematically annotate functions, based on their protein sequences and available biochemical studies, enzymes with similar catalytic mechanisms have been clustered together into an enzyme superfamily. Typically, enzymes within a superfamily have similar overall three-dimensional structures, conserved catalytic residues, but large variations in substrate recognition sites and residues to accommodate the diverse biochemical reactions that are catalyzed within the superfamily.

In vitro blood brain barrier models: An overview.

Understanding the composition and function of the blood brain barrier (BBB) enables the development of novel, innovative techniques for administering central nervous system (CNS) medications and technologies for improving the existing models. Scientific and methodological interest in the pathology of the BBB resulted in the formation of numerous in vitro BBB models. Once successfully studied and modelled, it would be a valuable tool for elucidating the mechanism of action of the CNS disorders prior to their manifestation and the pathogenic factors.

Frailty Syndrome: A Review.

Frailty is a condition associated with ageing, co-morbidity and disability. Frailty was an elusive concept earlier despite efforts at consensus. There is now a better understanding of the multisystem dysfunction and the instability involved and an apparent clarity on measures that could correct deficits and ameliorate symptoms.

An undiagnosed myasthenia gravis presenting as isolated recurrent acute respiratory failure.

Acute respiratory failure is an uncommon initial presentation of myasthenia gravis (MG). In our case a 22-year-old woman of unrecognized MG presented to the emergency department with isolated respiratory failure as the first presenting symptom. Initially she presented with dysphonia and was managed by speech therapist and ENT surgeons for 3 months.

Carpal tunnel syndrome caused by cysticercosis.

We present a case of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) due to compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel, caused by cysticercosis. Nerve conduction studies revealed severe CTS. Magnetic resonance imaging suggested an inflammatory mass compressing the median nerve in carpal tunnel.

Oxcarbazepine-induced Stevens Johnson syndrome: A rare case report.

Although carbamazepine is the most common cause of Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS) a new antiepileptic drug, oxcarbazepine which is structurally related to carbamazepine, has also been rarely shown to induce SJS. Here we report a case with SJS, which was induced by oxcarbazepine.

Acute subarachnoid hemorrhage as initial presentation of dural sinus thrombosis.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in the older is most often due to aneurismal rupture. Other vascular lesions are known to rarely cause SAH. Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) can be difficult to diagnose because of its wide spectrum of clinical manifestations.

Dysphagia in acute stroke: correlation with stroke subtype, vascular territory and in-hospital respiratory morbidity and mortality.

Aims: The study aimed at correlation of post-stroke dysphagia with area and volume of infarct/ bleed, and with subsequent in-hospital respiratory morbidity and mortality.

Materials And Methods: 50 patients of acute stroke were serially recruited. Standard Staff swallowing assessment was performed within 24 hours of admission along with pulse oximetry.

An outbreak of leptospirosis in Mumbai.

Following prolonged water logging due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai during July 2000, a total of 102 patients clinically suspected of leptospirosis were admitted in our hospital. Blood samples were examined for the presence of leptospires by dark ground microscopy (DGM) and IgM antibodies were detected by ELISA. Out of 102 blood samples, 37 were positive by ELISA giving a positivity rate of 36.

Neuromuscular respiratory failure in Guillain-Barre Syndrome: evaluation of clinical and electrodiagnostic predictors.

Unlabelled: Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) has an unpredictable clinical course with up to 30% of patients requiring assisted ventilation during the course of their illness. Successful management mandates anticipation, prompt recognition and optimal treatment of neuromuscular respiratory failure in GBS.

Aims: To identify clinical and electrodiagnostic predictors of neuromuscular respiratory paralysis in GBS.

Geophagia leading to hypokalemic quadriparesis in a postpartum patient.

Pica is an eating disorder associated with ingestion of variety of non-food substances. A postpartum patient who presented with acute flaccid quadriparesis was detected to have severe hypokalemia. After extensive investigations for cause of hypokalemia, history of geophagia (clay-eating) was obtained.
