The archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus P1 carboxylesterase is a thermostable enzyme with a molecular mass of 33.5 kDa belonging to the mammalian hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) family. In our previous study, we purified the enzyme and suggested the expected amino acids related to its catalysis by chemical modification and a sequence homology search.

There has been growing interest in the association between infectious disease and mental disorders, but an association between enterovirus (EV) infection and tic disorders has not been sufficiently explored. Herein, we aim to investigate the association between EV infection and incidence of tic disorders in a nationwide population-based sample using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. We identified individuals aged ≤18 years prior to 2005 with an inpatient diagnosis of EV infection and/or history of EV infection.

Background: Cognitive dysfunction is common in major depressive disorder (MDD) and a critical determinant of health outcome. Anhedonia is a criterion item toward the diagnosis of a major depressive episode (MDE) and a well-characterized domain in MDD. We sought to determine the extent to which variability in self-reported cognitive function correlates with anhedonia.

Background: To our knowledge, no epidemiological study has reported on whether an association between antidepressant exposure and gastric cancer exists. Herein, we aim to investigate the possible association between antidepressant exposure and gastric cancer incidence.

Methods: Using a nested case-control design, we identified 26289 cases with gastric cancer and 127984 controls from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD).

Purpose Of Review: Cognitive dysfunction in major depressive disorder (MDD) is common, pervasive across multiple subdomains of cognitive function, and is a principle determinant of health outcomes from patient, provider, and societal perspectives. The overarching aim herein is to provide rationale for the evaluation, measurement, and specific treatment of cognitive function in adults with MDD.

Recent Findings: Evidence indicates that cognitive dysfunction in MDD is a critical mediator of workplace disability.

A post hoc analysis was conducted using data from participants (N=631) with a DSM-IV-TR defined diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD) who were enrolled in the International Mood Disorders Collaborative Project (IMDCP) between January 2008 and July 2013. It was determined that 20.6% of adults with mood disorders as part of the IMDCP fulfilled criteria for binge eating behaviour (BE).

To our knowledge, no prior population-based study has been published wherein the primary aim was to evaluate whether an association between psychotropic drug prescription and cervical cancer exists. Herein we have conducted the first study that primarily aimed to determine the association between antidepressants use and risk of invasive cervical cancer in the general population. This is a population-based study utilizing Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database.

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) has been associated with cognitive impairment during depressed, manic and euthymic periods. Inflammation has been shown to be involved in the pathophysiology of BD and cognitive impairment.

Methods: For this systematic review, the MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar and ClinicalTrials.

Background: Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is believed to accelerate wound healing by altering wound microvascular blood flow. Although many studies using laser Doppler have found that NPWT increases perfusion, recent work using other modalities has demonstrated that perfusion is reduced. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of NPWT on tissue oxygenation of the foot, which is the most sensitive region of the body to ischemia.

Purpose: Transcutaneous partial oxygen tension (TcpO2) is considered the gold standard for assessment of tissue oxygenation, which is an essential factor for wound healing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between macrocirculation and TcpO2 in persons with diabetes mellitus.

Subjects And Setting: Ninety-eight patients with diabetic foot ulcers participated in the study (61 men and 37 women).

Adequate tissue oxygenation is an essential factor in diabetic foot management. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy has been successfully used as adjunctive treatment to improve the healing of diabetic foot ulcers. However, the clinical uses of HBO therapy are limited due to the low availability of HBO chambers, poor patient compliance, and high oxidative potential.

We demonstrate the proof-of-concept for developing a multi-color fluorescence imaging system based on plasmonic wavelength selection and double illumination by white light source. This technique is associated with fluorescence excitation by transmitted light via a diffraction of propagating surface plasmons. Since double illumination through both sides of isosceles triangle prism in the Kretschmann configuration enables multiple transmission beams of different wavelengths to interact with the specimen, our approach can be an alternative to conventional fluorescence detection owing to alignment stability and functional expandability.
