Mass incarceration in the United States presents major healthcare challenges, and otorhinolaryngology-related needs within carceral settings are underrecognized. Public health crises, as exemplified by the COVID-19 pandemic which led to over 3,000 deaths among incarcerated individuals, can intensify disparities. Both acute otorhinolaryngology conditions, such as craniomaxillofacial trauma, impending airway compromise, and life-threatening infection, as well as more chronic conditions such as cancer, sinusitis, or ear infections can lead to impaired quality of life, disability, or preventable mortality.

Background: Chronic cough is a common but challenging clinical condition that can adversely affect the safety of awake surgical endeavors such as awake craniotomy (AC). This case lesson highlighted a patient with severe refractory chronic cough undergoing AC for resection of a recurrent left frontal, insula, anterior temporal anaplastic ependymoma of the eloquent cortex.

Observations: The patient was successfully managed using a multifaceted medical treatment regimen combined with preoperative and intraoperative cough suppression therapy with a speech-language pathologist.

This study presents an automated algorithm that measures ocular deviation quantitatively using photographs of the nine cardinal points of gaze by means of deep learning (DL) and image processing techniques. Photographs were collected from patients with strabismus. The images were used as inputs for the DL segmentation models that segmented the sclerae and limbi.

Purpose: Diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) can induce and trigger airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of long-term DEP exposure on AHR, inflammation, lung fibrosis, and goblet cell hyperplasia in a mouse model.

Methods: BALB/c mice were exposed to DEPs 1 hour a day for 5 days a week for 3 months in a closed-system chamber attached to a ultrasonic nebulizer (low dose: 100 μg/m³ DEPs, high dose: 3 mg/m³ DEPs).
