Background: γ-Amino butyric acid (GABA) antagonists are proven targets for control of lepidopteran and other pests. New heterocyclic compounds with high insecticidal activity were discovered using a competitive-intelligence-inspired scaffold-hopping approach to generate analogs of fipronil, a known GABA antagonist. These novel aryl heterocyclic amines (AHAs) displayed broad-spectrum activity on a number of chewing insect pests.

Article Synopsis
  • DAS-40278-9 maize, developed by Dow AgroSciences, is genetically engineered to tolerate phenoxy auxin herbicides like 2,4-D.
  • A metabolism study using C-radiolabeled 2,4-D revealed that the herbicide is metabolized to 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and conjugated with glucose.
  • Field studies in the U.S. and Canada found minimal residues of 2,4-D and 2,4-DCP in mature grain, forage, and stover, with levels mostly undetectable or very low.
