Background: The optimal treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head has not been established yet. The aim of this study was to report preliminary clinical results of focal anatomic-resurfacing implantation for the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

Methods: Five patients (four male, one female) with seven surgical procedures, ages between 37 and 52 with an average age of 45.

Background: Various medications are used intra-articularly for postoperative pain reduction after arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Magnesium, a N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, may be effective for reduction of both postoperative pain scores and analgesic requirements.

Methods: A total of 67 patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery were divided randomly into two groups to receive intra-articular injections of either 10 mL magnesium sulphate (100 mg⁄mL; group M, n=34) or 10 mL of normal saline (group C, n=33).

Background: Osteoprotegerin (OPG), an inhibitor of osteoclastogenesis, has recently been under the spotlight in studies regarding the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis.

Aim: To evaluate the value of serum OPG in the diagnosis and severity in patients with stable angina pectoris (SA) and unstable angina pectoris/non ST elevation myocardial infarction.

Methods: This study involved 160 patients, SA (n = 65), acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS; n = 65), and a control group (n = 30).

Objectives: We investigated the frequency of meniscal extrusion and associated knee joint lesions by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with meniscal tears.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated MRI findings of 100 patients (41 males, 59 females; mean age 54 + or - 10 years; range 27 to 76 years) with meniscal tears in 126 knee joints. Using coronal images, extrusion was defined as a distance of = or > 3 mm between the peripheral border of the meniscus and the edge of the tibial plateau.

Aneurysms of the coronary arteries are uncommon occurrences that usually develop secondary to atherosclerosis and are often asymptomatic. We present a 57-year-old male patient who presented with the diagnosis of an inferior wall acute myocardial infarction with a large aneurysm of the right coronary artery and with morbid obesity. To the best of our knowledge, a relationship between body mass index and coronary artery aneurysm has not been reported in the literature so far.

Radiotherapy for tumors can cause soft tissue necrosis, osteonecrosis, and pathologic fractures. A 47-year-old woman presented with a pathologic fracture of the left clavicle 10 years after radiotherapy following radical mastectomy for breast cancer. She was treated with a compound rib-latissimus dorsi osteomusculocutaneous flap with a 4-cm segment of the sixth rib.

Bone marrow edema syndrome (BMES) is a nontraumatic syndrome characterized by disabling joint pain. The disease occurs especially in the hip joint, and the ankle joint has been reported in the English-language literature to be affected only rarely. We describe here the case of an adult with BMES in both ankle joints.

Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis predominantly affects middle-aged women. Most cases with rhizarthrosis can be managed successfully by conservative means. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate pain and tolerability of viscosupplementation therapy with hyaluronic acid (HA) for trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis.

A successful surgical intervention to restore glenohumeral stability should be based on the detection of all the problems and on a plan to correct all those that are reparable. Contribution of arthroscopy to better understand the pathological anatomy and to evaluate coexisting intra-articular problems, and advances in imaging modalities and in implant technology have increased the success rates and decreased complications. The best way to avoid complications is to gather all the relevant data preoperatively and during surgery to draw the correct diagnosis and to employ the most appropriate approach or approaches accordingly.

Doxorubicin (DXR) is an anthracycline antibiotic, broadly used in tumor therapy. In the present study we investigated whether vitamin E and catechin can reduce the toxic effects of doxorubicin. Vitamin E (200 IU/kg/week), catechin (200 mg/kg/week), doxorubicin (5 mg/kg/week), doxorubicin+vitamin E (200 IU/kg/week), doxorubicin+catechin (200 mg/kg/week) combinations were given to rats weighing 210-230 g (n=6/group).

[Classification of rotator cuff tears].

Acta Orthop Traumatol Turc

December 2003

Classification of rotator cuff tears may yield useful information on diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and evaluation of treatment results. The shape, localization, etiology, size, topography, pathology, and history of rotator cuff tears, together with the involvement of specific tendons in the occurrence of a tear may be of great value in the hand of expert interpreters. This article intends to give a brief description of rotator cuff tears by way of illustration.

Idarubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic extensively used in acute leukemia. In the present study we investigated whether vitamin E and catechin can reduce the toxic effects of idarubicin. Vitamin E (200 IU kg(-1) week(-1)), catechin (200 mg kg(-1) week(-1)), idarubicin (5 mg kg(-1) week(-1)), idarubicin + vitamin E (200 IU kg(-1) week(-1)), and idarubicin + catechin (200 mg kg(-1) week(-1)) combinations were given to male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 210 to 230 g (N = 6/group).
