Deletion of the gene encoding the major (p)ppGpp synthetase in the background of the Δ mutant restored the reduced expression of ribosomal protein genes, suggesting that inhibition of the respiratory ETC leads to the Rel-dependent stringent response (SR) in this bacterium.
