Marburg virus (MARV) disease (MVD) is an uncommon yet serious viral hemorrhagic fever that impacts humans and non-human primates. In humans, infection by the MARV is marked by rapid onset, high transmissibility, and elevated mortality rates, presenting considerable obstacles to the development of vaccines and treatments. Bats, particularly , are suspected to be natural hosts of MARV.

Inorganic lead-free metal halide perovskites have garnered much attention as low-toxicity alternatives to lead halide perovskites for luminescence and photovoltaic applications. However, the electronic structure and properties of these materials, including the composition dependence of the band structure, spin-orbit coupling, and Zeeman effects, remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated vacancy-ordered CsBiX (X= Cl, Br) perovskite nanocrystals using magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy.

  • This study is about helping doctors and surgeons find the best ways to diagnose and treat skin cancers in kids and teenagers, especially types like cutaneous melanoma and atypical Spitz tumors.
  • A group of 33 skin cancer specialists from different fields worked together and used research to come up with their recommendations.
  • They suggested specific ways to perform surgeries, the importance of classifying tumors correctly, and rules about how much tissue to remove around suspicious areas.

Low-dimensional metal halide perovskites have unique optical and electrical properties that render them attractive for the design of diluted magnetic semiconductors. However, the nature of dopant-exciton exchange interactions that result in spin-polarization of host-lattice charge carriers as a basis for spintronics remains unexplored. Here, we investigate Mn-doped CsPbCl nanocrystals using magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy and show that Mn dopants induce excitonic Zeeman splitting which is strongly dependent on the nature of the band-edge structure.

Background: Tanning bed users have a significantly increased risk of melanoma, but it remains unclear how indoor tanning drives melanomagenesis. Tanning bed radiation is often thought of as a substitute for natural UV radiation despite differences in the maximum doses, UV content, body sites exposed, and patterns of melanoma that arise.

Methods: To better understand the epidemiologic trends and etiology of melanoma associated with tanning bed use, we described the patterns of melanoma in patients with quantifiable tanning bed usage and performed exome sequencing of 182 melanocytes from normal skin of a subset of these patients.

Background And Aims: PKC-fused blue naevi are a recently described group of melanocytic tumours that have distinctive morphological features, including a pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma-like junctional component or a dermal biphasic architecture associating with naevocytoid nests surrounded by dendritic and spindled pigmented melanocytes (so-called 'combined common and blue naevus'). There have been reports of smooth muscle hyperplasia in a hamartoma-like pattern in cases of combined blue naevi without genetic exploration.

Materials And Methods: Herein, we describe 12 cases of protein kinase C (PKC)-fused blue tumours associated with a co-existing smooth muscle hyperplasia, identified from a total of 98 PKC-fused melanocytic tumours.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is widely recognized as a highly sensitive technology for chemical detection and biological sensing. In SERS-based biomedical applications, developing highly efficient sensing platforms based on SERS plays a pivotal role in monitoring disease biomarker levels and facilitating the early detection of cancer biomarkers. Hyperuricemia, characterized by abnormally high concentrations of uric acid (UA) in the blood, was associated with a range of diseases, such as gouty arthritis, heart disease, and acute kidney injury.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is increasingly being utilized as an ancillary tool for diagnostically challenging melanocytic neoplasms. It is incumbent upon the pathology community to perform studies assessing the benefits and limitations of these tools in specific diagnostic scenarios. One of the most challenging diagnostic scenarios faced by skin pathologists involves accurate diagnosis of desmoplastic melanocytic neoplasms (DMNs).

Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) is an important sensor for innate immune cells, including neutrophils, for the recognition of pathogen infection. Lipoteichoic acid (LTA), a cell wall component of gram-positive bacteria, is a TLR2 ligand. LTA-induced TLR2 signaling pathways are well established in neutrophils.

  • * The tumors primarily affected younger patients, averaging 20 years old, and typically appeared as small bumps on the ear or extremities, showing specific growth patterns and cellular features under a microscope.
  • * Follow-up on these patients indicated a positive outlook, as no recurrences or metastases were observed over a median follow-up period of over 4 years.

Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter mutations (TPMs) are frequently found in different cancer types, including ∼70% of sun-exposed skin melanomas. In melanoma, TPMs are among the earliest mutations and can be present during the transition from nevus to melanoma. However, the specific factors that contribute to the selection of TPMs in certain nevi subsets are not well understood.

Hollow and porous plasmonic nanomaterials have been demonstrated for highly sensitive biosensing applications due to their distinctive optical properties. Immunosensors, which rely on antibody-antigen interactions, are essential constituents of diverse biosensing platforms owing to their exceptional binding affinity and selectivity. The majority of immunosensors and conventional bioassays needs special storage conditions and cold chain systems for transportation.

The Photoelectron-Related Image and Nano-Spectroscopy (PRINS) endstation located at the Taiwan Photon Source beamline 27A2 houses a photoelectron momentum microscope capable of performing direct-space imaging, momentum-space imaging and photoemission spectroscopy with position sensitivity. Here, the performance of this microscope is demonstrated using two in-house photon sources - an Hg lamp and He(I) radiation - on a standard checkerboard-patterned specimen and an Au(111) single crystal, respectively. By analyzing the intensity profile of the edge of the Au patterns, the Rashba-splitting of the Au(111) Shockley surface state at 300 K, and the photoelectron intensity across the Fermi edge at 80 K, the spatial, momentum and energy resolution were estimated to be 50 nm, 0.

  • Spatial transcriptomic technologies like the Visium platform allow researchers to analyze gene expression across various tissue regions.
  • The article introduces a new software called STmut, which helps visualize genetic changes such as point mutations and copy number alterations in Visium data.
  • While STmut can analyze copy number across different tissue sample types, it cannot evaluate single nucleotide variants in FFPE samples, highlighting the strengths and limitations of different data types.

Chromosomal rearrangements can initiate and drive cancer progression, yet it has been challenging to evaluate their impact, especially in genetically heterogeneous solid cancers. To address this problem we developed HiDENSEC, a new computational framework for analyzing chromatin conformation capture in heterogeneous samples that can infer somatic copy number alterations, characterize large-scale chromosomal rearrangements, and estimate cancer cell fractions. After validating HiDENSEC with in silico and in vitro controls, we used it to characterize chromosome-scale evolution during melanoma progression in formalin-fixed tumor samples from three patients.

Mucosal melanoma remains a rare cancer with high mortality and a paucity of therapeutic options. This is due in significant part to its low incidence leading to limited patient access to expert care and downstream clinical/basic science data for research interrogation. Clinical challenges such as delayed and at times inaccurate diagnoses, and lack of consensus tumor staging have added to the suboptimal outcomes for these patients.

We discovered a simple regime where a near-critical plasma irradiated by a laser of experimentally available intensity can self-organize to produce positrons and accelerate them to ultrarelativistic energies. The laser pulse piles up electrons at its leading edge, producing a strong longitudinal plasma electric field. The field creates a moving gamma-ray collider that generates positrons via the linear Breit-Wheeler process-annihilation of two gamma rays into an electron-positron pair.
