Article Synopsis
  • * In a study, scientists found that tiny plastics (nanoplastics) caused harm to baby marine worms when they were exposed to certain chemicals, while bigger plastic pieces (microplastics) didn’t affect them at all.
  • * The study shows that nanoplastics can hold onto these harmful chemicals and make them more concentrated around the baby worms, putting them at greater risk, especially when they are very young.

Pregnancies with a complete hydatidiform mole and co-existing fetus (CMCF) are rare, but increasingly common due to the rising prevalence of assisted reproductive technology. They are frequently associated with adverse obstetric outcomes, providing women with the challenge of pregnancy termination or continuing the pregnancy at the risk of maternal-fetal morbidity and fetal mortality. This report demonstrates two cases of CMCF pregnancy with excellent maternal-fetal outcomes, including spontaneous resolution of the molar tissue antenatally.

This study focuses on modeling air quality with an adaptive utilization of spatio-temporal information from multiple air quality monitoring stations under a multi-scale framework. To this end, it is necessary to consider different strategies to combine different methods to decompose the given series and to fuse multi-site information. Based on a systematic comparative analysis, we propose a novel multi-scale and multi-site modeling method named the multivariate empirical mode decomposition and spatial cosine-attention-based long short-term memory (MEMD-SCA-LSTM).

Due to their prevalence in urban contaminated water, the driving factors of organophosphate esters (OPEs) need to be well examined, and their related ecological impacts should include that of their transformation products (TPs). Additionally, a robust framework needs to be developed to integrate multiple variables related to ecological impacts for improving the ecological health assessment. Therefore, OPEs and TPs in urban stormwater and wastewater in Hong Kong were analyzed to fill these gaps.

Background: Cyclin E1 (CCNE1) is a potential predictive marker and therapeutic target in tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). Smaller studies have revealed unfavorable associations for CCNE1 amplification and CCNE1 overexpression with survival, but to date no large-scale, histotype-specific validation has been performed. The hypothesis was that high-level amplification of CCNE1 and CCNE1 overexpression, as well as a combination of the two, are linked to shorter overall survival in HGSC.

Article Synopsis
  • Advanced-stage mucinous ovarian carcinoma (MOC) is difficult to treat due to poor chemotherapy response and the need for better biomarkers for stage I treatment, leading researchers to analyze gene-expression and clinicopathologic data.
  • A study identified 19 genes potentially linked to patient prognosis, validating findings with data from 604 patients that included different types of tumors.
  • Results indicated that an infiltrative pattern of invasion correlates with worse survival, and higher levels of certain proteins (THBS2 and TAGLN) are associated with poor prognosis, suggesting both may be useful for determining treatment approaches.

Increasing chemical pollution of aquatic environments is a growing concern with global relevance. A large number of organic chemicals are termed as "micropollutants" due to their low concentrations, and long-term exposure to micropollutants may pose considerable risks to aquatic organisms and human health. In recent decades, numerous treatment methods and technologies have been proposed to remove micropollutants in water, and typically several micropollutants were chosen as target pollutants to evaluate removal efficiencies.

Tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinomas (HGSC) are highly proliferative neoplasms that generally respond well to platinum/taxane chemotherapy. We recently identified minichromosome maintenance complex component 3 (MCM3), which is involved in the initiation of DNA replication and proliferation, as a favorable prognostic marker in HGSC. Our objective was to further validate whether MCM3 mRNA expression and possibly MCM3 protein levels are associated with survival in patients with HGSC.

Purpose: Intrauterine levonorgestrel (LNG-IUD) is used to treat patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma (EAC) and endometrial hyperplasia with atypia (EHA) but limited evidence is available on its effectiveness. The study determined the extent to which LNG-IUD with or without metformin (M) or weight loss (WL) achieves a pathological complete response (pCR) in patients with EAC or EHA.

Patients And Methods: This phase II randomized controlled clinical trial enrolled patients with histologically confirmed, clinically stage 1 FIGO grade 1 EAC or EHA; a body mass index > 30 kg/m2; a depth of myometrial invasion of less than 50% on MRI; a serum CA125 ≤ 30 U/mL.

Introduction: Sentinel lymph node dissection is widely used in the staging of endometrial cancer. Variation in surgical techniques potentially impacts diagnostic accuracy and oncologic outcomes, and poses barriers to the comparison of outcomes across institutions or clinical trial sites. Standardization of surgical technique and surgical quality assessment tools are critical to the conduct of clinical trials.
