The reliability of routine partial thromboplastin time (PTT) methods in the measurement of the anticoagulant effect of heparin has been assessed in a study involving over 300 hospitals in the U.S. and overseas.

In monitoring the effects of industrial exposure resulting from the pharmaceutical manufacture of oestrogen-progestogen combinations by coagulation studies acceleration of some clotting tests was found. The most pronounced changes were in workers most closely associated with the industrial process. Less pronounced changes were found in women employees not closely concerned with the processing and may have been secondary to the postmenopausal bleeding to which they were prone.

A series of collaborative exercises on the one-stage prothrombin time test involving hospitals in Britain and overseas was performed between 1972 and 1977. The British Comparative Thromboplastin (BCT) and the lyophilised test plasmas were issued from the National (UK) Reference Laboratory for Anticoagulant Reagents and Control. Participants were asked to test the plasma samples with the BCT using the recommended technique.

Trichophyton mentagrophytes invasion of guinea pig skin was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Biopsies were obtained daily for 12 days from experimental infection sites. Dermatophyte invasion, examined in detail by scanning electron microscopy of cross-sectioned, prefixed skin was evidenced by: the appearance of hyphae within the stratum corneum; follicular invasion by hyphae, which remained initially within the follicle wall; emergence of the hyphae from the wall into the follicular canal; proliferation of the fungus down the follicle, with furrowing of the follicle wall and hair shaft cuticle; penetration of hyphae into the hair shaft by subcuticular and transcuticular routes; and massive peripilar hyphal proliferation with arthrosporogenesis.

Arthrosporogenesis of the dermatophyte Trichophyton mentagrophytes was examined by light and by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Sabouraud dextrose agar plates were inoculated with microconidia and incubated in an atmosphere of 8% CO2. Typical germination and hyphal branching continued to day 4, when hyphae began to be increasingly coated with granular-fibrillar material.

The challenging restoration of form and function in radical surgery of the head and neck demands sound concepts and proper execution in reconstruction. Flaps are most frequently employed in reconstruction, following major surgery because of their rich blood supply and cosmetic superiority. Of the many types of flaps known, the midline forhead flap, temporoforehead flap, mastoid-occipital flap, tongue flap, and deltopectoral flap have enjoyed most popularity.

Lingual thyroid represents the only functioning thyroid tissue in the body in 70-80% of the cases, surgical ablation of which will produce hypothyroidism. Transposition of the lingual ectopic thyroid with its vasculary supply intact as a pedicle graft is presented. This seems to be the most locigal approach in preserving the viability and function of these ectopic tissues.

We evaluate the importance of cancer spread to the lymphatic system in the posterior triangle. The posterior triangle tissues of 51 radical neck specimens were serially sectioned and studied for metastic involvement. The findings were correlated with the findings in the anterior triangle and the primary tumor.

Overwhelming statistics have been published regarding the success of radiation therapy in the management of laryngeal carcinoma. The fate of those patients whose cancers are not controlled by radiotherapy is often left to speculation. An analysis is made of 61 patients with early and advanced laryngeal cancer treated initially with radiation therapy and subsequently operated upon because of recurrent or persistent tumor.

The end results of 264 patients with vocal cord carcinoma treated by either surgery or radiation therapy at the University of Illinois from 1955 to 1972 are analyzed. Stage I glottic carcinoma can be cured by either surgery or radiation alone (86 percent and 80 percent). Stage II glottic cancer treated by surgery has achieved survival rates of 70 percent.

Anodic oxide films on niobium were studied in situ during formation using a computer-controlled ellipsometer at a wavelength of 6328 A. They were found to be optically homogeneous, isotropic, and nonabsorbing with no field applied but to become anisotropic (optically uniaxial with optic axis normal to the film surface) with field applied. The ordinary and extraordinary indices decreased, and the thickness increased quadratically with applied field.

Ocular muscle imbalance is a common complication in fractures of the zygomaticomaxillary complex. Involvement can be direct; caused by entrapment of either the muscle or tendon in the fracture; or indirect, produced by central or peripheral damage to the cranial nerves supplying the muscles, massive orbital edema or hemorrhage. A case of complete paralysis of the extraocular muscles caused by a critical reduction of the size of the orbit as a result of fracture of the zygomaticomaxillary complex is described.

The subject of combined therapy for carcinoma of the head and neck is as perplexing now as it was in its beginning. Low vs high dose pre-operative radiation for carcinoma of the larynx remains a valid question. A total of 92 patients with advanced laryngeal carcinoma were studied at the University of Illinois.
