Coronaviruses (CoVs) pose a significant threat to public health, causing a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and outcomes. Beyond precipitating global outbreaks, Human CoVs (HCoVs) are frequently found among patients with respiratory infections. To date, limited attention has been directed towards alphacoronaviruses due to their low prevalence and fatality rates.

Background: Orthohantavirus hantanense (HTNV) poses a substantial global public health threat due to its role in causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). HTNV outbreaks are particularly prevalent in the Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces of the Republic of Korea (ROK). This study aimed to evaluate the application of advanced nanopore sequencing and bioinformatics to generate complete genome sequences of HTNV, with the objective of accurately identifying infection sources and analyzing their genetic diversity.

The phylogeographic inference approach aims to connect genomic data with epidemiology to understand the spread and evolution of pathogens using visualization of spatiotemporal reconstructions. Orthohantavirus hantanense (HTNV), the causative agent of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), represents a significant global public health concern. Here, we introduce a localized Nextstrain platform for HTNV, offering a comprehensive resource for facilitating spatiotemporal genomic surveillance and the study of evolutionary dynamics of viral genomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Orthohantavirus hantanense is a significant public health threat in Eurasia, causing hemorrhagic fever; while the primary causing agent in the Republic of Korea (ROK) is the Hantaan virus, the Amur virus (AMRV) may also be transmitted to humans from rodents in China and Russia.
  • A study of rodents in Gangwon Province from 2015 to 2018 found that 16.1% tested positive for the Soochong virus (SOOV), with complete genomic sequencing revealing five novel whole-genome sequences, highlighting particular regions in Hongcheon-gun and Pyeongchang-gun.
  • Phylogenetic analysis showed distinct evolutionary patterns between

Objective: This study sought to determine the proportions of women at risk of preterm birth who received progesterone, elective and rescue cerclage, or pessary to prevent preterm birth, by using medical records. The authors also sought to determine whether these proportions differed among primary-, secondary-, and tertiary-level centres.

Methods: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study and extracted data from consecutive medical charts of women with an estimated date of confinement over 3 months in primary-, secondary-, and tertiary-level centres in Southern Ontario.
