Background: Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most important stress factors in plants, with its high mobility in soils, ease of uptake by plants and toxicity at low concentrations. Aluminum (Al) is another phytotoxic metal, the accumulation of which is a crucial agricultural complication for plants, especially in acidic soils.

Methods And Results: In this study, Bryophyllum daigremontianum clone plantlets were obtained from bulbiferous spurs of a mother plant and separated into four different groups and watered with Hoagland solution and mixtures containing 0, 50, 100, and 200 µM of AlCl and CdCl each for 75 days.

Background/aim: Cardiac surgery, especially in the presence of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), is associated with an inflammatory reaction that may promote microcirculatory alterations, in addition to the general impact on system hemodynamics. Anemia and transfusion make patients more susceptible to the deleterious effects of CPB. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of dilutional anemia, which is caused by CPB and can be treated with 1–2 units of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion, on global tissue oxygenation parameters in cardiac surgery patients.

Objective: This study was designed to test the effects of different types of preconditioning and postconditioning methods on spinal cord protection following aortic clamping.

Methods: The animals (rabbits) were divided into sham-operated, ischemic preconditioning, remote ischemic preconditioning, simultaneous aortic and ischemic remote preconditioning, and ischemic postconditioning groups. After neurological evaluations, ultrastructural analysis and immunohistochemical staining for caspase-3 were evaluated after 24 h following ischemia.

Objective: To evaluate the natural history of isolated muscular ventricular septal (m-VSD) defects during gestation and up to 1 year postnatally, as well as the association with chromosomal anomalies.

Material And Methods: Between August 2007 and July 2012, 76 fetuses with isolated m-VSDs represented the study population. The following variables were evaluated: site and size of the m-VSDs, presence of chromosomal anomalies, pregnancy outcome, and spontaneous closure rate from diagnosis up to 1 year postnatally.

Objective: Mini dental implants could be an alternative treatment method for prosthetic treatment of edentulous cleft palate. The aim of this study was to analyze stress distribution around the cortical bone and different plans using a varied number of mini dental implants in edentulous unilateral complete cleft palates.

Materials And Methods: Three edentulous maxillary models were modified to create unilateral complete cleft palates.

Objective: This study evaluated the clinical outcomes and safety of treating caesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) by means of suction curettage followed when required by Foley tamponade, with or without methotrexate (MTX) therapy preceding the curettage.

Methods: Twenty-five patients with CSP were identified between August 2008 and April 2012. The first team of doctors treated Group A patients (n = 11) with systemic MTX followed by dilatation and suction curettage whereas the second team of doctors carried out only a suction curettage on women of Group B (n = 14).

Aim: The aim of this study was to document the clinical and cytogenetic results of a large series of amniocentesis (AS) cases from Turkey.

Material And Methods: Second-trimester amniocentesis cases performed in Suleymaniye Maternity Hospital for Research and Training between January 2007 and December 2011 were included.

Results: During this period, 6124 AS were performed.

Pai syndrome is a rarely encountered disease characterized by findings of median cleft lip, facial skin polyps, nasal mucosal polyps and midline central nervous system lipoma. We report a case with prenatal detection of a pericallosal lipoma and a skin tag on the forehead. After delivery, the diagnosis was confirmed as a case of Pai syndrome.

Objectives: To find an effective way to predict Cesarean section (CS) before induction of labor.

Methods: Nulliparous women at ≥ 41 weeks of pregnancy were enrolled in the study. Bishop score (BS), cervical length (CL), posterior cervical angle (PCA), quantification of the cervical stromal echogenicity by tissue histograms and opening of the internal cervical os (funnelling) were recorded.

Background/aims: It was the aim of this study to determine if intraoperative digital dilatation of the closed internal cervical ostium affects the healing of the uterine scar after a cesarean section (CS).

Methods: In this randomized, prospective study, 94 term pregnant patients who elected to have a CS were assigned to two groups: intraoperative digital dilatation of the internal cervical ostium (group I, n = 48) or no dilatation (group II, n = 46). Vaginal ultrasound was used to check the integrity of the cesarean scar at the uterine incision site 40-42 days after the operation.

Purpose: We investigated the distribution of early clinical outcomes among normal, obese, and morbidly obese patients undergoing open heart surgery.

Methods: Medical records of 1,000 patients undergoing open heart surgery since February 2011 at our hospital were investigated retrospectively after permission was obtained from the Council of Education Planning of the hospital. The comorbidities and perioperative and discharge data were analyzed for 279 patients with a body mass index (BMI) score between 18 and <30 [non-obese reference group (NRG, n = 279)]; 166 patients with BMI between 30 and <35 [obese group (OG, n = 166); and 192 seriously obese patients with BMI ≥35 [extreme obese group (EOG, n = 192)].

Obturators are routinely used in the rehabilitation of maxillectomy defects. Ideally, obturators should be easily constructed to produce a comfortable and stable prosthesis. This article describes a technique that provides an easy method for the construction of an obturator prosthesis using a visible light-cured (VLC) resin.

The periods of ischemia and reperfusion represent different characteristics by lack of oxygen and reoxygenation. The aim of this experimental spinal cord injury model was to investigate whether resveratrol has protective effects during ischemia or reperfusion and the mechanism of the protection by using N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase. Rabbits were divided into seven groups according to the time of administration of resveratrol or L-NAME (RI and RR, resveratrol during ischemia or reperfusion; IL and RL, L-NAME during ischemia or reperfusion; RILR, resveratrol during ischemia and L-NAME during reperfusion; LIRR, L-NAME during ischemia and resveratrol during reperfusion; control group).

The fabrication of meatal obturator prosthesis with titanium framework using a 1-step final impression procedure is described in the case of a 44-year-old woman with congenital absence of the soft palate. The meatus obturator results in a more stable maxillary prosthesis and permits acceptable speech for a patient with total absence of the soft palate. The fabrication technique is relatively easy and saves time by eliminating some laboratory procedures.

Background: Rhabdomyomas are the most common benign cardiac neoplasms occurring in the fetus and neonate, with most of them identified within the first year of life. Cardiac rhabdomyomas are frequently associated with tuberous sclerorosis.

Case: A 25-year-old, pregnant woman with no remarkable personal or family history was referred to us for a suspected fetal cardiac anomaly.

We describe the fabrication of a meatus obturator prosthesis made with visible light-cured (VLC) resin. The fabrication technique is relatively easy and saves time by eliminating some laboratory procedures for both the patient and the practitioner. The meatus obturator results in a more stable maxillary prosthesis and permits acceptable speech for patients using it.

This article describes a procedure in which the fabrication of a closed hollow obturator can be made with three sections of a denture flask by using silicone. Ease of fabrication while controlling the thickness of the hollow portion and eliminating leakage and discoloration are major advantages of this technique while minimizing laboratory and clinical appointment time.
