Article Synopsis
  • - Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major health concern globally, with miR-137 identified as a crucial tumor suppressor that is often silenced through methylation and H3K27 trimethylation by EZH2.
  • - Research indicates that the frequent methylation of miR-137 in CRC is linked to decreased expression, which can be reversed, enhancing its potential as a therapeutic target.
  • - miR-137 plays a significant role in inhibiting CRC cell behavior and regulates the Wnt signaling pathway by targeting RNF4, ultimately leading to destabilization of key proteins like c-Myc and β-catenin, which are involved in tumor growth.

Purpose: Early identification of lung cancer (LC) will considerably facilitate the intervention and prevention of LC. The human proteome micro-arrays approach can be used as a "liquid biopsy" to diagnose LC to complement conventional diagnosis, which needs advanced bioinformatics methods such as feature selection (FS) and refined machine learning models.

Methods: A two-stage FS methodology by infusing Pearson's Correlation (PC) with a univariate filter (SBF) or recursive feature elimination (RFE) was used to reduce the redundancy of the original dataset.
