The distribution of motor errors can influence optimal motor planning (where to aim). In football instep kicking, it was shown that ball landing locations exhibit the right-up-left-down elliptical distribution in right-footed kickers and vice versa. However, this was reported as a result of mixed multiple kickers; the individual-level error distribution has been unclear.

Recipients of public assistance with advanced chronic kidney disease: insights into receiving a presentation of kidney replacement therapy options and polypharmacy from Japanese investigators with innovative network about kidney disease study.

Background: The characteristics of patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are recipients of public assistance in Japan, and the adequacy of their medical care have not been reported previously.

Methods: The records of patients with CKD stage G5 who visited nine facilities in Japan from April to June 2013 were retrospectively reviewed to compare the characteristics and care of recipients of public assistance with those of non-recipients. Receiving a presentation of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) options and polypharmacy were used as indicators of suboptimal medical care.

Hyperkalemia presentation at a clinic during the cold season.

Familial pseudohyperkalemia (FP) is an underrecognized cause of pseudohyperkalemia, caused by the leaking of potassium from red blood cells. This extracellular shift of potassium is temperature-dependent and occurs when blood samples are stored below room temperature or for a long time, manifesting as apparent hyperkalemia. We report a suspicious case of FP, which demonstrated an apparent seasonal trajectory of serum-potassium levels at the local clinic.

An Autopsy Case of Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome After a Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Vaccination.

A 73-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease received the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) mRNA vaccine. The following day, the patient developed a headache, followed by a tonic-clonic seizure and decreased consciousness. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head revealed no signs of stroke but multiple vasoconstrictions.

Point-of-Care Ultrasound for the Diagnosis of Congestive Kidney Due to Severe Acidemia: A Case Report.

A 51-year-old woman with mitochondrial myopathy and congestive heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction was admitted due to loss of appetite and progressive frailty. She presented with acute kidney injury (AKI) and severe acidemia. Given her medical history and physical examination (jugular vein distention was not obvious), prerenal causes (hypovolemia/hypotension) of AKI were considered most likely.

Consequences of kidney donation by age in Japanese living kidney donors: a single-center study.

Background: Elderly living kidney donors (LKDs) are becoming increasingly important in countries with a high prevalence of living-donor kidney transplants and an aging society. This study explored the features of elderly LKDs, focusing on their subsequent outcomes.

Methods: This single-center, retrospective, observational study included eligible LKDs who donated their kidneys between April 2008 and July 2022.

We assessed the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of urethral graciloplasty cross-innervated by the pudendal nerve. A simulation surgery on three male fresh cadavers was performed.

Maxillary Reconstruction With a Rib-attached Free Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Flap.

In defect reconstruction after maxillary tumor resection, filling the dead space created by resection and reconstruction of surrounding areas are crucial for good cosmetic outcomes. Although various procedures have been described in the literature, most are complex and require advanced surgical skills. Therefore, in this study, the authors aimed to identify a simple procedure for successful reconstruction with minimal bone fixation.

The prevalence of CKD may be higher in patients with cancer than in those without due to the addition of cancer-specific risk factors to those already present for CKD. In this review, we describe the evaluation of kidney function in patients undergoing anticancer drug therapy. When anticancer drug therapy is administered, kidney function is evaluated to (1) set the dose of renally excretable drugs, (2) detect kidney disease associated with the cancer and its treatment, and (3) obtain baseline values for long-term monitoring.

Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis possibly caused by vedolizumab for ulcerative colitis in a kidney transplant recipient: A case report.

Vedolizumab, which is used to effectively treat ulcerative colitis (UC), is a humanized monoclonal antibody that specifically inhibits α4β7 integrin on lymphocytes and prevents lymphocyte migration into the intestinal tissues. Herein, we report a case of acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN) probably caused by vedolizumab in a kidney transplant recipient (KR) with UC. Approximately 4 years after kidney transplantation, the patient developed UC and was treated initially with mesalazine.

Comparison of static and dynamic symmetry between masseter-innervated and dual-innervated free multivector serratus anterior muscle transfer for complete facial paralysis.

Purpose: In this study, facial symmetry was compared between the masseter-innervated and dual-innervated free multivector serratus anterior muscle transfer (FMSAMT) methods.

Methods: Eighteen patients with unilateral complete facial paralysis underwent facial reanimation surgery between April 2006 and July 2019. The masseter-innervated FMSAMT group (Group M, n = 8) underwent end-to-end coaptation with the ipsilateral masseter nerve in one stage.

Hyponatremia and mortality in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the relationship between hyponatremia and worse outcomes in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.

Methods: The MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Web of Science databases were used to search for relevant articles. The target population was patients on maintenance hemodialysis (those undergoing hemodialysis for ≥60 days).

Marked hyperkalemia due to inappropriate blood sample storage in two suspected cases of familial pseudohyperkalemia.

We herein report two suspected cases of pseudohyperkalemia who presented with severe hyperkalemia examined at small primary care clinics; however, re-exams at a tertiary care hospital showed normal potassium levels. We reproduced the laboratory examination conditions of the clinics and found that hyperkalemia was due to sampling/storage condition of serum, which is strongly suggestive of familial pseudohyperkalemia (FP). FP is a possible but under-appreciated cause of hyperkalemia, which does not require treatment, so it is important to include FP in the differential diagnosis of hyperkalemia especially in cases with discrepant of serum potassium levels at different settings.

Serological and histopathological assessment of galactose-deficient immunoglobulin A1 deposition in kidney allografts: A multicenter prospective observational study.

Background: Recurrent immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy is an important risk factor for kidney allograft loss. However, there is no classification system for IgA deposition in kidney allografts based on serological and histopathological evaluation of galactose-deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1). This study aimed to establish a classification system for IgA deposition in kidney allografts based on serological and histological evaluation of Gd-IgA1.
