Background: Contractile, electrical, and structural remodeling has been associated with atrial fibrillation (AF), but the progression of functional and structural changes as AF sustains has not been previously evaluated serially.

Objectives: Using a rapid-paced persistent AF canine model, the authors aimed to evaluate the structural and functional changes serially as AF progresses.

Methods: Serial electrophysiological studies in a chronic rapid-paced canine model (n = 19) prior to AF sustaining and repeated at 1, 3, and 6 months of sustained AF were conducted to measure changes in atrial conduction speed and direction.

Plant membrane-bound prenyltransferases (PTs) catalyse the transfer of prenyl groups to acceptor substrates, phenols, using prenyl diphosphates as the donor substrate. The presence of prenyl residues in the reaction products, prenylated phenols, is key to the expression of a variety of physiological activities. Plant PTs generally exhibit high specificities for both substrate recognition and prenylation sites, while the molecular mechanism involved in these enzymatic properties is largely unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the right ventricle (RV) of the heart remodels in response to increased pressure over a span of six weeks, focusing on the early changes that could inform treatment timing.
  • Researchers found that within the first week after introducing pressure (using pulmonary artery banding), there was a significant inflammatory response and changes in cellular metabolism that suggested RV stress.
  • The findings imply that detrimental changes in RV function start earlier than previously thought, indicating that interventions to prevent RV remodeling may need to happen sooner than current practices suggest.

Aims: Rotational re-entries and ectopic foci, or 'drivers', are proposed mechanisms for persistent atrial fibrillation (persAF), but driver-based interventions have had mixed success in clinical trials. Selective targeting of drivers with multi-month stability may improve these interventions, but no prior work has investigated whether drivers can be stable on such a long timescale.

Objective: We hypothesized that drivers could recur even several months after initial observation.

  • Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is a surgery for prostate cancer that helps older patients, especially those with heart or brain problems, but it's unclear how antithrombotic (AT) medications affect recovery.
  • In a study with 394 patients, those on AT meds had a harder time recovering urinary control compared to those not on the medication.
  • The study found that patients taking AT agents had more complications and a lower chance of being completely pad-free after surgery, but there was no major difference in cancer recurrence between the two groups.

Right ventricular (RV) fibrosis is associated with RV dysfunction in a variety of RV pressure-loading conditions where RV mechanical stress is increased, but the underlying mechanisms driving RV fibrosis are incompletely understood. In pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases characterized by elevated mechanical stress and transforming growth factor - beta-1 (TGF-β1) signaling, myocardin-related transcription factor A (MRTF-A) is a mechanosensitive protein critical to driving myofibroblast transition and fibrosis. Here we investigated whether MRTF-A inhibition improves RV pro-fibrotic remodeling and function in response to a pulmonary artery banding (PAB) model of RV pressure-loading.

Legume plants form symbiotic relationships with rhizobia, which allow plants to utilize atmospheric nitrogen as a nutrient. This symbiosis is initiated by secretion of specific signaling metabolites from the roots, which induce the expression of genes in rhizobia. These metabolites are called gene inducers (NGIs), and various flavonoids have been found to act as NGIs.

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease that can be broadly classified into type 2, which is primarily steroid-sensitive and eosinophilic, and non-type 2, which is primarily steroid-resistant and neutrophilic. While the mechanisms leading to the development of molecular-targeted therapies for type 2 asthma are being elucidated, much remains to be learned about non-type 2 asthma. To investigate the role of oxidative stress in refractory allergic airway inflammation, we compared asthma models generated by immunizing wild-type and nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-deficient mice with the house dust mite antigen.

Prenylated phenolics occur in over 4000 species in the plant kingdom, most of which are known as specialized metabolites with high chemical diversity. Many of them have been identified as pharmacologically active compounds from various medicinal plants, in which prenyl residues play a key role in these activities. Prenyltransferases (PTs) responsible for their biosynthesis have been intensively studied in the last two decades.

Background: To facilitate robotic radical prostatectomy (RP), we developed a novel anterior approach that utilizes a peritoneal incision between the umbilical ligaments to develop the Retzius space without contacting the internal inguinal rings, followed by closure of this space prior to prostatectomy and vesicourethral anastomosis. This approach could decrease the incidence of postoperative inguinal hernia (IH), similar to a Retzius-sparing RP (RS-RP). We compared the incidence of IH following this novel approach with that following conventional anterior RP and RS-RP.

4-Coumaroyl-CoA ligase (4CL) is a key enzyme in the phenylpropanoid pathway, which is involved in the biosynthesis of various specialized metabolites such as flavonoids, coumarins, lignans, and lignin. Plants have several 4CLs showing divergence in sequence: Class I 4CLs involved in lignin metabolism, Class II 4CLs associated with flavonoid metabolism, and atypical 4CLs and 4CL-like proteins of unknown function. Shikonin, a Boraginaceae-specific specialized metabolite in red gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon), is biosynthesized from p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and the involvement of 4CL in its biosynthesis has long been debated.

We hypothesized that anthocyanins act as a sugar-buffer and an alternative electron sink during leaf senescence to prevent sugar-mediated early senescence and photoinhibition. To elucidate the role of anthocyanin, we monitored seasonal changes in photosynthetic traits, sugar, starch and N contents, pigment composition, and gene expression profiles in leaves exposed to substantially different light conditions within a canopy of an adult fullmoon maple (Acer japonicum) tree. Enhancement of starch amylolysis accompanied by cessation of starch synthesis occurred in the same manner independent of light conditions.

Shikonin and its enantiomer, alkannin, are bioactive naphthoquinones produced in several plants of the family Boraginaceae. The structures of these acylated derivatives, which have various short-chain acyl moieties, differ among plant species. The acylation of shikonin and alkannin in Lithospermum erythrorhizon was previously reported to be catalyzed by two enantioselective BAHD acyltransferases, shikonin O-acyltransferase (LeSAT1) and alkannin O-acyltransferase (LeAAT1).
