Article Synopsis
  • GH29A α-l-fucosidases are enzymes that help break down specific sugars in glycoconjugates and can also be used to create human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) through a process called transglycosylation.
  • Researchers used bioinformatics tools and phylogenetic clustering to identify and analyze new microbial GH29A α-l-fucosidases from an underexplored group, as well as previously known enzymes, to determine their biochemical properties and behavior under different conditions.
  • The study found that transglycosylation of certain substrates was most effective at neutral to alkaline pH levels and revealed new structural insights into how these enzymes function, particularly regarding regioselectivity in product formation.

Functionalized mesoporous materials have become a promising carrier for enzyme immobilization. In this study, Santa Barbara Amorphous 15 (SBA-15) was modified by N-aminoethyl-γ-aminopropyl trimethoxy (R). R-SBA-15 was employed to purify and immobilize recombinant β-glucosidase from Terrabacter ginsenosidimutans (BgpA) in one step for the first time.

Objective: The relationship between serum total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels and mortality in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients remains inconsistent. We aimed to explore the individual and combined association of TC and TG levels with the risk of mortality in Chinese MHD patients.

Methods: 1036 MHD patients were enrolled in this multicenter, prospective cohort study.

Background: Since the twenty-first century, the prevalence of diabetes has risen globally year by year. In Gansu Province, an economically underdeveloped province in northwest China, the cost of drugs for diabetes patients accounted for one-third of their total drug costs. To fundamentally reduce national drug expenditures and the burden of medication on the population, the relevant departments of government have continued to reform and improve drug policies.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the economic burden of congenital heart disease inpatients in underdeveloped regions of China, specifically Gansu Province, highlighting a lack of available data on this topic.
  • From 2015 to 2020, the average hospital stay for patients was about 10 days, with rising inpatient costs over time, although out-of-pocket expenses decreased significantly.
  • Key factors influencing these costs include the length of stay, types of cardiac procedures, medication use, patient age, and hospital quality; the study suggests improving resource distribution to lessen financial pressures on families.

This study aimed to investigate the status and the needs of personnel training in pharmacy intravenous admixture service (PIVAS) and provide a reference for the comprehensive training of pharmacists in PIVAS in China. A total of 21 pharmacists from PIVAS of West China Hospital, Sichuan University and West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University were selected by purposive sampling to conduct 3 rounds of focus group interviews, and the Colaizzi phenomenological method was used for qualitative analysis. The personnel training in PIVAS is mainly on practical skills for daily work but rarely on comprehensive quality, adopting centralized lectures and regular assessment while lacking in individualized training.

Background: The association between exposure to trace elements mixture and the prevalence of kidney stones and the interactions between elements are unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the association between exposure to trace elements mixture and the prevalence of kidney stones and the interactions between the elements.

Methods: A total of 1,244 participants (139 kidney stone formers and 1,105 non-stone former participants) in NHANES 2017-2018 were included.

We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of medication adherence, assess the association between guardians' mental health and medication adherence for children seen at outpatient department from western China, and identify characteristics associated with nonadherence. We conducted a cross-sectional survey. Participants were recruited by consecutive sampling from the outpatient of the West China Second Hospital from October 2021 to April 2022.

Improving physiological activity of primary ginsenosides through biotransformation is of great significance for food applications. In this study, gynostapenoside XVII, gynostapenoside LXXV, ginsenoside F, and ginsenoside CK were obtained by enzymolysis of an accessible extract composed of ginsenoside Rb and Rd. Their effects on melanin content and tyrosinase activity were compared in vitro, and molecular docking simulation was employed to elucidate the interaction between tyrosinase and individual saponin.

Article Synopsis
  • Epidemiological studies linking cadmium exposure to mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are limited.
  • A cohort study involving 1,825 CKD patients in the USA identified significant associations between higher urinary and blood cadmium levels and increased risk of all-cause mortality during an average follow-up of 82 months, with 576 deaths recorded.
  • The findings indicate that reducing cadmium exposure could potentially lower mortality risk in CKD patients, emphasizing the need for preventive measures in vulnerable populations.

Background: Data are limited on the relationship between waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and mortality risk among maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Moreover, the combined association of body mass index (BMI) and WHR with mortality remains uncertain. Therefore, we aimed to explore the individual and combined association of BMI and WHR with the all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.

Highly efficient charge transfer is a critical factor to modulate the photocatalytic activity. However, the conscious modulation of charge transfer efficiency is still a great challenge. Herein, a novel interfacial Mo-N bond and appropriate oxygen vacancies (OVs) modulated S-scheme MoO/S-CN heterojunction was rationally fabricated for efficient photocatalytic disinfection.

Developing photocatalysts with superior performance to generate hydrogen peroxide (HO) and degrade oxytetracycline (OTC) is an effective strategy for the treatment of energy crisis and water purification. Herein, BN nanosheets were anchored onto the ZnInS microspheres for the research. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) results demonstrate that due to different work functions and unique 2D/2D contact, the electron is spatially separated in BN/ZnInS nanocomposite, which increases the electron transfer efficiency from 43.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the solvent extraction and complexing ability of tetradentate N-donor ligands, specifically a compound called CyMe4-BT-Phen and its derivatives, including Br, hydroxyphenyl, and nitryl.
  • The ligands were found to selectively extract americium (Am(III)) over europium (Eu(III)), with the derivative 5-nitryl-CyMe4-BTPhen showing significantly lower efficiency for Eu(III) compared to CyMe4-BTPhen.
  • The researchers also analyzed how different substituents affect the ligands' affinity for lanthanides using UV/vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, determining stability constants and basicity,

Iron-cobalt layered double hydroxides (FeCoLDH) showed superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, but the sluggish water adsorption and dissociation dynamics restrict its capacity to degrade organic pollutants by electro-oxidation. Herein, enhanced electro-oxidation performance of FeCoLDH with hydrophilic structure was designed and exhibited efficient removal efficiency of tetracycline. Theoretical calculation and characterization results consistently elucidated that the electronic structure of FeCoLDH is optimized by doping phosphorus and depositing copper nanodots (NDs).
