Article Synopsis
  • Glycemic variability (GV) is a common issue in critically ill patients, and this study explored its impact on 28-day mortality through a multicenter analysis involving 578 patients across five ICUs in Turkey.
  • The study tracked several glycemic parameters within the first 24 hours, finding significant differences in CV (coefficient of variation), SD (standard deviation), and MGD (maximal-minimal glucose difference) between survivors and non-survivors, with higher levels linked to increased mortality risk.
  • Results indicated that CV is an independent risk factor for mortality, with a strong correlation with MGD, suggesting that monitoring these glycemic metrics could be critical for predicting patient outcomes in intensive care settings.

Introduction: Both high- and low-income countries reported increased antibiotic consumption among COVID-19 patients during the first months of the pandemic. To date, however, no studies have examined changes in antibiotic consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic within humanitarian emergency contexts.

Method: Data was collected by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for the years 2018-2021 across the following humanitarian settings: Afghanistan (Lashkar Gah), Bangladesh (Kutupalong), the Democratic Republic of Congo (Mweso and Baraka), and South Sudan (Bentiu).

Unlabelled: Tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDI) is a convenient method to detect cardiac dysfunction in the infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs). Umbilical cord serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is known to be higher in IDMs. We aimed to determine whether there is a relation between diastolic functions examined by TDI and cord serum IGF-1 levels of IDMs.

Pentraxin-3, high sensitive CRP (HsCRP) and adropin were investigated in cord blood of infants of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (IDM) to evaluate the exposure of fetus to inflammation and whether there is any correlation with clinical findings.Forty IDM and forty three infants whose mother did not have diabetes were included in this prospective study. Adropin, pentraxin-3 and HsCRP levels were measured in the cord blood samples.

In this paper, a fast, cheap, simple, sensitive and selective spectrophotometric method based on high spin peroxo-Fe(III)-EDTA complex in the alkaline medium was developed for the determination of hydrogen peroxide (HO) in real water samples. The purple-coloured complex with a maximum absorbance at a wavelength of 525 nm was formed. Various parameters such as type of stabilizer reagent and its concentration, reaction time, Fe(III), EDTA and NH concentration were optimized.

: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a newly developed, leak closure Internal Compression Therapy (ICT) (Invamed, Ankara, Turkey) device during a single-session procedure in a group of patients with primary deep valve incompetence. : There were 286 patients who were diagnosed with deep venous reflux by duplex scanning. They underwent valvular leak operations to treat primary deep venous insufficiency.

Objective: The aim of the study is to determine the most accurate length and position of umbilical venous catheter (UVC).

Study Design: This prospective study included premature infants who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit with inserted UVC between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2015. The length of UVC was calculated according to the Shukla formula [(3 × birth weight + 9)/2 + 1] and the catheter was inserted under sterile conditions.

Objectives: Although high procalcitonin (PCT) levels are associated with poor neurological outcomes and increased mortality rates in patients treated with targeted temperature management (TTM) in the postcardiac arrest (CA) period, there are limited data about the correlation between PCT levels and infection. The aim of our study was to assess the relationship of PCT levels in the first 48 hours with early period infections, late period neurological prognosis, and mortality in patients treated with TTM after CA.

Materials And Methods: Serum PCT was measured on admission days 1 and 2.

Consciousness is a highly significant indicator of an ICU patient's condition but there is still no method to automatically measure it. Instead, time consuming and subjective assessments are used. However, many brain and physiologic variables are measured continuously in neurological ICU, and could be used as indicators for consciousness.

Purpose: Superficial venous insufficiency is a common problem associated with varicose veins. In addition to classical symptoms, it may result in skin changes, venous ulcers and has a great impact on patients' health-related quality of life. In the last decade, minimally invasive techniques such as endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) have been developed as alternatives to surgery in an attempt to reduce morbidity and improve efficiency.

Objective: To examine the effects of classical technique, electrocautery, and ultrasonic dissection on endothelial integrity, function, and preparation time for harvesting the radial artery (RA) during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Methods: Forty-five patients who underwent isolated CABG and whose RA was suitable for use were studied and divided into three groups: Group 1, classical method (using sharp dissection); Group 2, electrocautery; and Group 3, ultrasonic cautery. Levels of prostacyclin and nitric oxide derivatives were examined biochemically; vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) and endothelial nitric oxide synthetase (eNOS) values were assessed using immunohistochemical staining.

Purpose: The present study aimed to compare the isokinetic muscle strength and range of motion (ROM) values of the ankle between patients diagnosed with C chronic venous insufficiency (group 1, n=57) and healthy individuals (group 2, n=30).

Materials And Methods: After identifying the venous refilling time (VRT) of all participants, the active ROM of the ankle joint and plantar flexion (PF) and dorsi-flexion (DF) muscle strength in the concentric/concentric mode at angular velocities of 60°/sec and 120°/sec were measured.

Results: No statistically significant differences were found between the demographic data of groups 1 and 2 (P>0.

Primary cardiomyopathy is one of the most common inherited cardiac diseases and harbors significant phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity. Because of this, genetic testing has become standard in treatment of this disease group. Indeed, in recent years, next-generation DNA sequencing has found broad applications in medicine, both as a routine diagnostic tool for genetic disorders and as a high-throughput discovery tool for identifying novel disease-causing genes.
