Altering the crystal morphology of silicalite-1 through microemulsion-based synthesis.

The crystal morphology of silicalite-1 was adjusted through a microemulsion-based hydrothermal synthesis. The surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with cosurfactant butanol was used to form water-in-oil microemulsions containing the silicalite-1 synthesis gel. The crystal morphology of silicalite-1 was adjusted from coffin-shaped to novel rod-shaped and to irregular-shaped nanoparticles by varying the microemulsion composition.

In vitro growth and ovulation of follicles from ovaries of estrogen receptor (ER){alpha} and ER{beta} null mice indicate a role for ER{beta} in follicular maturation.

Both estrogen receptor (ER) alpha and beta are expressed within the ovary and lack of either of these receptors affects ovarian function. In this study, the role of ERalpha and ERbeta in folliculogenesis and ovulation was further analyzed. Evaluation of ovarian follicle populations in wild-type and ERbeta knockout (betaERKO) ovaries revealed reduced late antral growth and ovulatory capacity of betaERKO follicles, indicated by reduced numbers of large antral follicles and corpora lutea and increased atresia of large antral follicles.

Effects of over-expression of the regulatory enzymes DraT and DraG on the ammonium-dependent post-translational regulation of nitrogenase reductase in Azospirillum brasilense.

Nitrogen fixation in Azospirillum brasilense is regulated at transcriptional and post-translational levels. Post-translational control occurs through the reversible ADP-ribosylation of dinitrogenase reductase (Fe Protein), mediated by the dinitrogenase reductase ADP-ribosyltransferase (DraT) and dinitrogenase reductase glycohydrolase (DraG). Although the DraT and DraG activities are regulated in vivo, the molecules responsible for such regulation remain unknown.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype, northern Malawi.

In a 7-year population-based study in Malawi, we showed that Beijing genotype tuberculosis (TB) increased as a proportion of TB cases. All the Beijing genotype strains were fully drug sensitive. Contact histories, TB type, and case-fatality rates were similar for Beijing and non-Beijing genotype TB.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Russia: clinical characteristics, analysis of second-line drug resistance and development of standardized therapy.

The aim of the study presented here was to identify patients with multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) in the Samara region of Russia and to analyze the susceptibility of their isolates to second-line drugs in order to develop an empirical, standard, second-line treatment regimen. Treatment of MDRTB can be individualized based on in vitro laboratory analysis or standardized. In the latter case there is still a need to ascertain local second-line drug-resistance patterns.

Encapsulation and sustained release of a model drug, indomethacin, using CO(2)-based microencapsulation.

A carbon dioxide (CO(2))-based microencapsulation technique was used to impregnate indomethacin, a model drug, into biodegradable polymer nanoparticles. Compressed CO(2) was emulsified into aqueous suspensions of biodegradable particles. PPARgamma staining as a surrogate for PAX8/PPARgamma fusion oncogene expression in follicular neoplasms: clinicopathological correlation and histopathological diagnostic value.

The PAX8/PPARgamma (PPFP) fusion-oncogene is moderately specific for follicular thyroid carcinomas (FTC). It remains unknown whether this can be translated into improved diagnosis, classification, or outcome prediction. We studied a cohort of well-characterized follicular adenomas (FA), FTC, and Hurthle cell carcinomas (HCC) from patients with complete clinical follow-up, to determine whether PPARgamma immunohistochemistry (as a surrogate of PAX8/PPARgamma expression) helps to distinguish FA from FTC and to assess its diagnostic accuracy as an adjunct to frozen section.

Repressor mutant forms of the Azospirillum brasilense NtrC protein.

The Azospirillum brasilense mutant strains FP8 and FP9, after treatment with nitrosoguanidine, showed a null Nif phenotype and were unable to use nitrate as their sole nitrogen source. Prior to immobilization, dextransucrase was treated with dextranase to remove the dextran layer covering the enzyme surface, thus increasing the accessibility of its reactive groups to the epoxide centers of the support. The influence of phonological neighborhood on visual word perception.

In the research reported here, we investigated the influence of phonological neighborhood density on the processing of words in the visual lexical decision task. The results of the first experiment revealed that words with large phonological neighborhoods were verified more rapidly than words with small phonological neighborhoods. In the second experiment, we replicated this effect with a more tightly controlled set of stimuli.

Combined immunomagnetic separation-molecular beacon-reverse transcription-PCR assay for detection of hepatitis A virus from environmental samples.

In this study, a molecular-beacon-based real-time reverse transcription (RT)-PCR assay was developed to detect the presence of hepatitis A virus (HAV) in environmental samples. A 125-bp, highly conserved 5' noncoding region of HAV was targeted. The sensitivity of the real-time RT-PCR assay was tested with 10-fold dilutions of viral RNA, and a detection limit of 1 PFU was obtained.

Stringent regulation of LH secretion from the pituitary is vital to ovarian function in mammals. Two rodent models of LH hypersecretion are the transgenic LHbeta-C-terminal peptide (LHbetaCTP) and estrogen receptor-alpha (ERalpha)-null (alphaERKO) mice. Both exhibit ovarian phenotypes of chronic anovulation, cystic and hemorrhagic follicles, lack of corpora lutea, interstitial/stromal hyperplasia, and elevated plasma estradiol and testosterone.

Targeted disruption of the different ER genes has generated experimental animal models that are very useful in evaluating the distinct and cooperative roles of the two estrogen receptors, ERalpha and ERbeta, in reproductive but also non-reproductive tissues of both sexes. Optimizing an aerial spray for mosquito control.

The role of proper flight line positioning was demonstrated to be critical for maximizing product efficacy when spraying in crosswinds by small-droplet spray strategies. Characterization studies indicated clearly that aircraft height, small drop emission distribution, and the ambient winds combine to dilute the spray cloud before impacting surface targets. A 5-fold increase in mortality was achieved when we used optimization techniques to position the aircraft during a crosswind treatment test.
