We show that quantum entanglement can provide an exponential advantage in learning properties of a bosonic continuous-variable (CV) system. The task we consider is estimating a probabilistic mixture of displacement operators acting on n bosonic modes, called a random displacement channel. We prove that if the n modes are not entangled with an ancillary quantum memory, then the channel must be sampled a number of times exponential in n in order to estimate its characteristic function to reasonable precision; this lower bound on sample complexity applies even if the channel inputs and measurements performed on channel outputs are chosen adaptively or have unrestricted energy.

We study the evolution of conditional mutual information (CMI) in generic open quantum systems, focusing on one-dimensional random circuits with interspersed local noise. Unlike in noiseless circuits, where CMI spreads linearly while being bounded by the light cone, we find that noisy random circuits with an error rate p exhibit superlinear propagation of CMI, which diverges far beyond the light cone at a critical circuit depth t_{c}∝p^{-1}. We demonstrate that the underlying mechanism for such rapid spreading is the combined effect of local noise and a scrambling unitary, which selectively removes short-range correlations while preserving long-range correlations.

Aim: Transcutaneous electrical cranial-auricular acupoint stimulation (TECAS) is a novel non-invasive therapy that stimulates acupoints innervated by the trigeminal and auricular vagus nerves. Structural variation (SV) is a major cause of genetic disorders. In this paper, we show that low-depth (specifically, 4×) whole-genome sequencing using a single Oxford Nanopore MinION flow cell suffices to support sensitive detection of SV, particularly pathogenic SV for supporting clinical diagnosis. When using 4× ONT WGS data, existing SV calling software often fails to detect pathogenic SV, especially in the form of long deletion, terminal deletion, duplication, and unbalanced translocation.

We analyze the ultimate quantum limit of resolving two identical sources in a noisy environment. We prove that in the presence of noise causing false excitation, such as thermal noise, the quantum Fisher information of arbitrary quantum states for the separation of the objects, which quantifies the resolution, always converges to zero as the separation goes to zero. Noisy cases contrast with noiseless cases where the quantum Fisher information has been shown to be nonzero for a small distance in various circumstances, revealing the superresolution.

Objectives: Intrathecal baclofen pump associated central nervous system (CNS) infection and meningitis is a rare but serious complication and may have dire consequences. Due to bacterial biofilm formation, the optimal treatment strategy is usually for removal of the pump, followed by systemic antibiotics for treatment of local and CNS infection. We describe this case of a patient with recurrent Staphylococcus aureus pump site empyema and meningitis leading to status dystonicus, who was successfully managed with radical debridement and intrareservoir baclofen-vancomycin co-infusion.

Plasmon-induced hot carriers have recently attracted considerable interest, but the energy efficiency in visible light is often low due to the short lifetime of hot carriers and the limited optical absorption of plasmonic architectures. To increase the generation of hot carriers, we propose to exert multiple plasmonic resonant modes and their strong coupling using a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) nanocavity that comprises an Au nanohole array (AuNHA), a TiO thin film and an Au reflector. Unlike common MDM structures, in addition to the Fabry-Pérot mode in the dielectric layer, AuNHA as the top layer is special because it excites the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode in the Au nanoholes and launches the gap surface plasmon polariton (GSPP) mode in the Au reflector surface.
