Objectives: To investigate hot flashes and quality of life during combined androgen blockade (CAB) therapy using steroidal or nonsteroidal antiandrogens.

Methods: A total of 151 patients with prostate cancer, who were enrolled into this study from May 2001 to June 2003, were randomized to receive CAB therapy using a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist (leuprorelin) combined with a steroidal antiandrogen (chlormadinone) or a nonsteroidal antiandrogen (bicalutamide). The incidence of, frequency of, and distress due to hot flashes were evaluated with a self-administered questionnaire during a 2-year period.

Unilateral adrenal hyperplasia with primary aldosteronism is very rare and shows similar endocrine features to aldosterone-producing adenoma and bilateral adrenal hyperplasia. In this study, the mRNA expression of steroidogenic enzymes in unilateral adrenal hyperplasia was examined by in situ hybridization. We found subcapsular micronodules composed of spironolactone body-containing cells, which showed intense expression for 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, 11beta-hydroxylase, 18-hydroxylase, and 21-hydroxylase but not 17alpha-hydroxylase, indicating aldosterone production.

Purpose: Intravesical instillation of epirubicin (EPI) is one of the most effective adjuvant therapies for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer after transurethral resection. We evaluated the optimal duration of EPI instillation in a multi-institution prospective randomized clinical study.

Methods: Between June 1995 and May 1998, a total of 125 patients with superficial bladder cancer (transitional cell carcinoma grade 1 or 2) were enrolled in this study, and 102 patients were fully evaluated for recurrence.
