Achieving HBsAg seroclearance is a key goal in treating chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection but remains difficult with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs). Tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF), a recommended NA for managing chronic HBV infection (CHB), has uncertain effects on HBsAg levels and potential adverse events when used long-term after switching from entecavir (ETV). We retrospectively evaluated 77 CHB patients, including 47 who switched from ETV to TAF with a median follow-up of 40 months post-switch and a median of 60 months of HBsAg monitoring pre-switch.

Thermal ablation has been widely used for patients with small colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs), even for resectable cases; however, solid evidence has been scarce. Some propensity-score matching studies using patients with balanced baseline characteristics have confirmed less invasiveness and the comparable survival benefits of thermal ablation to liver resection. A more recent pivotal randomized controlled trial comparing thermal ablation and liver resection was presented during the American Society of Clinical Oncology 2024 meeting.

Purpose: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is beneficial for uncontrollable torso bleeding; however, prolonged REBOA causes ischemia-reperfusion injury. The purpose of this study is to examine the hypothesis that continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) with a cytokine-adsorbing hemofilter would improve mortality due to hemorrhagic shock with REBOA-reperfusion injury by controlling metabolic acidosis, hyperkalemia, and hypercytokinemia.

Methods: Hemorrhagic shock with 40% blood loss was induced by phlebotomy in eight female swine.

The epithelial and mesenchymal features of colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRAC) cell lines were compared in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) cultures. In 2D cultures, the three CRAC cell lines exhibited epithelial characteristics with high E-cadherin and low vimentin levels, whereas two exhibited mesenchymal traits with opposite expression patterns. In 3D cultures using low-attachment plates, mesenchymal cells from 2D cultures showed reduced vimentin mRNA levels.

Photodegradation of azilsartan yields a phenanthridine derivative (APP). We suspected that APP could be a DNA-reactive substance, since many phenanthridine derivatives are mutagenic. In silico quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis indicated potential mutagenicity of APP, due to DNA reactivity at the 6-aminophenanthridine moiety.

The unique characteristics of biological structures depend on the behavior of DNA sequences confined in a microscale cell under environmental fluctuations and dissipation. Here, we report a prominent difference in fluorescence from dye-modified single-stranded DNA in a light-induced assembly of DNA-functionalized heterogeneous probe particles in a microwell of several microliters in volume. Strong optical forces from the Mie scattering of microparticles accelerated hybridization, and the photothermal effect from the localized surface plasmons in gold nanoparticles enhanced specificity to reduce the fluorescence intensity of dye-modified DNA to a few %, even in a one-base mismatched sequence, enabling us to clearly highlight the single nucleotide polymorphisms in DNA.

The hemostatic function of platelets is complementary to blood coagulation. However, traditional platelet function tests have primarily focused on measuring platelet aggregation, reducing their clinical effectiveness for antiplatelet drug monitoring. To address this limitation, we propose a new test principle that evaluates platelet function and the effects of antiplatelet drugs through blood coagulation reactions.

Aims: Bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) are a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells that have been widely used in experimental therapies for patients with various diseases, including fractures.Activation of angiogenesis is believed to be one of the major modes of action of BM-MNCs; however, the essential mechanism by which BM-MNCs activate angiogenesis remains elusive. This study aimed to demonstrate that BM-MNCs promote bone healing by enhancing angiogenesis through direct cell-to-cell interactions via gap junctions, in addition to a previously reported method.

Cancer cells in the tumour microenvironment use various mechanisms to evade the immune system, particularly T cell attack. For example, metabolic reprogramming in the tumour microenvironment and mitochondrial dysfunction in tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) impair antitumour immune responses. However, detailed mechanisms of such processes remain unclear.
