[Spindle Cell Sarcoma Originated in the Anterior Mediastinum;Report of a Case].

An anterior mediastinal sarcoma is a very rare type of mediastinal tumor. A 45-year-old female visited our hospital with swelling in the right anterior chest wall. Radiographically, the tumor was found to originate from the thymus and to infiltrate to the major pectoral muscle through the 1st intercostal space.

Nano-micrometer-architectural acidic silica prepared from iron oxide of Leptothrix ochracea origin.

We prepared nano-micrometer-architectural acidic silica from a natural amorphous iron oxide with structural silicon which is a product of the iron-oxidizing bacterium Leptothrix ochracea. The starting material was heat-treated at 500 °C in a H2 gas flow leading to segregation of α-Fe crystalline particles and then dissolved in 1 M hydrochloric acid to remove the α-Fe particles, giving a gray-colored precipitate. It was determined to be amorphous silica containing some amount of iron (Si/Fe = ~60).

Acidic amorphous silica prepared from iron oxide of bacterial origin.

Microporous and mesoporous silica derived from biogenous iron oxide is an attractive catalyst for various organic reactions. Biogenous iron oxide contains structural silicon, and amorphous silica remains after iron oxide is dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid. The amorphous silica containing slight amounts of iron (Si/Fe = ∼150) is composed of ∼6-nm-diameter granular particles.

Intractable pneumothorax with empyema in a patient with interstitial pneumonia.

Secondary pneumothorax occurring in interstitial lung disease cases is a refractory and life-threatening condition, because of compromised lung function. A 70-year-old woman with interstitial pneumonia was referred to our hospital after treatment failure for pneumothorax associated with empyema. An open window thoracostomy was created, and mechanical irrigation and dressing changes of the pleural cavity were performed.

[Diaphragmatic metastasis from uterine corpus cancer].

We report a case of metastatic diaphragm tumor from uterine corpus cancer. A 72-year-old female had a tumor on right diaphragm 4-years after operation for uterine corpus cancer. After chemotherapy, tumor resection was performed by right lung basal segmentectomy, partial liver resection, and partial diaphragm resection.

Science in the art of the master Bizen potter.

Bizen stoneware, with the characteristic reddish hidasuki or "fire-marked" pattern, is one of Japan's best known traditional ceramic works of art. The means of creating and controlling the various hues of the hidasuki pattern has remained a mystery to outsiders for about a thousand years; the methods were known only to master potters who served under generations of master potters before them. In this Account, we present the results of 30 years of study in which we investigated the microstructure and color-formation process in Bizen stoneware.

Vascular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is the most severe type of EDS. It is an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder that results from mutations within the alpha1 type III collagen gene (COL3A1). We report a novel point mutation at donor splice-site in intron 42 of type III collagen gene resulting in the inclusion of 30 nucleotides into the mature mRNA in a case of vascular type of EDS.

Highly stereoselective synthesis of C-vinyl furanosides through acid-catalyzed S(N)2 inversion at the C-3 position of 1,2-dideoxy-hept-1-enitols.

A highly stereoselective synthesis of C-vinyl furanosides through the S(N)2 inversion at the C-3 position of the 1,2-dideoxy-hept-1-enitols is disclosed. Treatment of the 1,2-dideoxy-hept-1-enitols with diphenylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate as the acid catalyst produced the C-vinyl furanosides (3,6-anhydro-1,2-dideoxy-hept-1-enitol derivatives) via a subsequent S(N)2 intramolecular debenzyloxyation-cycloetherification reaction at the C-3 position.

Synthesis of a trisulfated heparan sulfate disaccharide analog and its use as a template for preliminary molecular imprinting studies.

A heparan sulfate disaccharide analog was synthesized by a multistep route. This synthesis was designed in such a way that one intermediate could be selectively deprotected to provide versatility during both synthesis and homologation of heparan sulfate related polysaccharides. Non-covalent imprinted polymers were prepared by using the synthesized disaccharide as a template and a primary amine functionalized acrylate as the key functional monomer suitable for specific sulfated sugar recognition.

Structure-activity studies of heparan mimetic polyanions for anti-prion therapies.

Polysulfated molecules, as the family of heparan mimetics (HMs) and pentosan polysulfate, are considered among the more promising drugs used in experimental models of prion diseases. Regardless of their therapeutic potential, structure-function studies on these polyanions are still missing. Here, we report the syntheses of a library of HMs of different molecular sizes, containing various sulfation and carboxylation levels, and substituted or not by different hydrophobic cores.

Needlescopic operation for partial lung resection.

Needlescopic operation using instruments with a diameter of 2 mm has not been applied to partial lung resection because of the difficulty in grasping the lung firmly or the possibility of injuring the lung easily with 2-mm forceps. We have developed a technique using a mini-loop retractor and successfully performed partial lung resection in 35 patients with pneumothorax, small lung tumor, or interstitial pneumonia.

Simultaneous regioselective protection of phenyl 1-thioglucosides at the C-3 and C-6 or at the C-2 and C-6 hydroxy groups.

Simultaneous regioselective 3,6- or 2,6-selective protection of 1-thio-beta- or alpha-D-glucopyranosides is described. The C-3 and C-6 hydroxy groups of the beta-thioglucoside were selectively protected with triisopropylsilyl or tert-butyldiphenylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate. The C-2 and C-6 hydroxy groups of the alpha-thioglucoside were selectively protected with tert-butyldiphenylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate.
