Supramolecular polymerization using two-dimensional π-conjugated chiral monomers has been mainly demonstrated because the supramolecular polymerization can be controlled by stereocommunication through π-π stacking between the two-dimensional chiral monomers. We herein report supramolecular copolymerization utilizing three-dimensional pentahedrons with twisted helical chirality through different combinations of helical-chiral acidic and basic pillar[5]arenes as comonomers. In this case, helical-sense matching is key to facilitating the supramolecular copolymerization.

Background: Left ventricular pseudo-false aneurysm is a rare complication of myocardial infarction and generally caused by an intramyocardial dissecting hematoma due to a fragile myocardium. The serpiginous dissecting case of ventricular septal perforation has an entry port in the left ventricle and exit port in the right ventricle, and the entry port must be closed to leave the dissected chamber on the low-pressure right side for treatment. Herein, we report a case of a large left ventricular pseudo-false aneurysm that was unaccompanied by a shunt after the surgical repair of a ventricular septal dissection.

Growing evidence supports pathogenic roles for chronically elevated hyaluronidase activity in numerous conditions. Elevated expression of one such hyaluronidase, the Cell Migration Inducing and hyaluronan binding Protein (CEMIP), has been implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of several cancers as well as demyelinating diseases in the central nervous system (CNS). Certain derivatives of terarylene are able to undergo a highly efficient oxidative cycloreversion cascade effect, a ring opening reaction with quantum yields above unity, resulting in a colored-to-colorless transition in solution. This paper describes the synthesis of a cerium(IV)-based molecular gear composed of a thioether functionalized phthalocyanine anchoring ligand, and a helical naphthalocyanine rotating cogwheel functionalized with four carbazoles. The naphthalocyanine ligand 9 was obtained after eleven steps (overall yield of 0.2 %) as a mixture of three geometrical isomers, two of which are chiral and exhibit high levels of steric hindrance, as shown by DFT calculations.

CD44 is a transmembrane cell adhesion molecule that is cleaved by the membrane proteinase, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10), on the cell surface via ectodomain shedding after cholesterol depletion. Lipid raft-mediated CD44 shedding is essential for cancer cell invasion. Centella asiatica (Centella) is a traditional botanical medicine that shows promise in treating dementia based on behavioral alterations seen in animal models of aging and cognitive dysfunction. In order to determine if Centella could similarly improve cognitive function and reduce disease burden in multiple sclerosis (MS), we tested its effects in the neuroinflammatory experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of MS. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are interconnected with bioengineering, yet have historically been absent from accreditation standards and curricula. Toward educating DEI-competent bioengineers and meeting evolving accreditation requirements, we took a program-level approach to incorporate, catalog, and assess DEI content through the bioengineering undergraduate program. A 78-year-old Japanese male with previous gastric cancer and untreated diabetes mellitus was admitted to hospital for persistent fever and leg edema. Blood culture was positive for Streptococcus angino'sus, and echocardiography showed isolated tricuspid valve infective endocarditis. Infection was controlled with intravenous antibiotics, but surgery was indicated because of persistent severe regurgitation and large vegetation of 15 mm in size.
