Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) combined with diallyl sulfide (DAS) in diabetic mice, focusing on its anti-diabetic and protective effects on various organs.
  • - EVOO significantly reduced elevated glucose and liver enzyme levels while normalizing harmful lipids, and it also improved the antioxidant defenses of the mice by enhancing key enzymes.
  • - The findings suggest that the combination of EVOO and DAS has strong potential as functional foods for managing diabetes and its related complications.

Date palm pits are highly available and inexpensive palm date by-products, representing a valuable source of natural antioxidants, particularly phenolic compounds. Date palm pit extract (DPPE) was prepared from these waste products and characterized for its phenolic content and in vitro antioxidant activity. Profiling DPPE by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS) showed the presence of dimers and trimers of (epi)catechin as the main constituents.

A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of zinc supply (0, 1, and 2 mM Zn as ZnSO) on morpho-physiological and biochemical parameters of caraway (Carum carvi L.). Exposure to different Zn concentrations for 12 weeks compromised severely all growth parameters (plant height, number of secondary branches, diameter of primary and secondary branches, fresh and dry weight of aerial parts and roots) yield and its components (number of umbels per primary branches and secondary branches; number of umbel per plant; number of seeds per plant; and the weight of 1000 seeds).

Article Synopsis
  • This research aimed to assess the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of a specific plant species, along with evaluating the best methods for extracting and analyzing its compounds.
  • The analysis of the leaves revealed a decent nutritional profile, including protein content (13.4%), significant levels of minerals like potassium and magnesium, and important fatty acids.
  • Despite the plant's low antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, its leaves show potential as feed for ruminants due to their beneficial chemical composition and also contain some valuable functional ingredients.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results indicate that DAS-enriched EVOO retains its quality over one month and has enhanced antioxidant properties compared to regular EVOO or DAS alone.
  • * The enriched EVOO demonstrated significant protective effects on liver health, lowering liver enzyme levels and inflammation, suggesting potential for developing functional foods with health benefits.

Enzyme-assisted extraction has emerged as an attractive green, cost-effective and high bioactive yielding technology by which desired bioactives with preserved or better efficacy are released. In the present study, the ability of cellulase, hemicellulase and their binary mixture (cellulase:hemicellulase; 1:1) in improving the extraction of essential oils from coriander ( L.) seeds, or the residue by-products from the distillation process containing value-added phytochemicals (fatty acids and phenolics) were evaluated.

Context: Natural products are reported to have a wide spectrum of pharmacological properties such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cholinesterase. The genus Hypericum (Hypericaceae) is a source of a variety of molecules with different biological activities, notably hypericin and various phenolics.

Objectives: The goals of the present work were the determination of total phenolic and flavonoid content, hypericin and hyperforin concentration as well as the evaluation of biological of Hypericum humifusum L.

The chemical composition of the volatile oils obtained from the roots, leaves, flowers, and stems of Thapsia garganica of Tunisian origin was investigated by GC-FID and GC/MS analyses. Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated monoterpenes were predominant in the oils of all plant parts. Bicyclogermacrene (21.

A comparative analysis of methanol extracts from fruit and leaves of Lycium intricatum Boiss., a Solanaceous shrubbery with the potential to become a high-value crop, was performed by means of liquid chromatography with photodiode array and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometric detection (LC/PDA/ESI-MS). The total phenolic (TPC), anthocyanin (TAC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents as well as the antioxidant capacity measured by four complementary methods were performed for each sample.
