Exploring risk factors and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns associated with bacteriuria among Syrian refugees in makeshift camps.

Background: The health and well-being of refugees are critically compromised by harsh living conditions, which foster the emergence of infectious diseases and the misuse of antimicrobial agents. This multicentre cross-sectional community-based study investigated the prevalence of urine carriage of bacteria and the associated antimicrobial resistance patterns among Syrian refugees living in makeshift camps in Lebanon, an East Mediterranean country.

Methods: We used multivariable logistic regression models to identify the risk factors associated with bacteriuria in this vulnerable population.

Background Nonselective beta-blockers (NSBBs) have been used in the management of portal hypertension and the prevention of initial and recurrent variceal bleeding in patients with liver cirrhosis. However, there is controversy regarding the use of NSBBs in patients with decompensated cirrhosis (DC) due to concerns over potential adverse effects, such as worsening of hepatic function and risk of hepatorenal syndrome (HRS). HRS is a serious complication of DC characterized by acute kidney injury (AKI) and progressive renal failure, and its development can lead to significant morbidity and mortality in this setting.

The Fusion of Wide Field Optical Coherence Tomography and AI: Advancing Breast Cancer Surgical Margin Visualization.

This study explores the integration of Wide Field Optical Coherence Tomography (WF-OCT) with an AI-driven clinical decision support system, with the goal of enhancing productivity and decision making in breast cancer surgery margin assessment. A computationally efficient convolutional neural network (CNN)-based binary classifier is developed using 585 WF-OCT margin scans from 151 subjects. The CNN model swiftly identifies suspicious areas within margins with an on-device inference time of approximately 10 ms for a 420 × 2400 image.

Family UNited: piloting of a new universal UNODC family skills programme to improve child mental health, resilience and parenting skills in Indonesia and Bangladesh.

Background: Family is one of the most influential social institutions and caregivers act as the main protective factors for children's mental health and resilience skills. Family skills programmes support caregivers to be better parents and strengthen positive age-specific and age-appropriate family functioning and interactions. We developed a universal, brief and light programme for implementation in low-resource settings, the Family UNited (FU) programme, and conducted a pilot study to show feasibility of implementation, replicability and effectiveness in improving family functioning, child behaviour and resilience.

Family Skills Training offers a combination of parenting knowledge, skill building, competency enhancement, and support to strengthen family protective factors, such as communication, trust, problem-solving skills, and conflict resolution. Through over a decade-long experience piloting evidence-based family skills packages globally, we developed a universal open-source family skills package, "Family UNited" (FU), designed for families with children aged 8 to 15 years living in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).

Predictors of all-cause mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients taking corticosteroids: a multicenter retrospective cross-sectional study.

Unlabelled: Despite the recommendations to avoid using corticosteroids systematically for hospitalized coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) patients, healthcare professionals used personalized treatments, including corticosteroids, as adjuncts to treat their patients due to their limited access to treatment options. This study aims to evaluate the use of corticosteroids among hospitalized COVID-19 patients with all-cause mortality as the primary outcome and to assess the predictors of all-cause mortality associated with the characteristics of the patients and the corticosteroid regimens adopted.

Hemochromatosis, either hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) or secondary hemochromatosis, consists of the accumulation of iron in the liver, heart, and other organs. It leads to end-organ damage in a proportion of affected subjects. Although liver-related morbidity (cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC]) and mortality are well established, the frequency of these complications remains controversial.

Metastatic melanoma to the lung cured with lobectomy: A case report.

We herein present the case of a 79-year-old female patient who presents with a single asymptomatic pulmonary nodule, melanocytic in nature, later identified as a remote secondary lesion of a primary cutaneous melanoma that was resected 22 years before presentation. Although quite atypical, the patient underwent resection of the affected pulmonary lobe; follow-up imaging did not reveal any local or distant recurrences.

Detection of COVID-19 Case from Chest CT Images Using Deformable Deep Convolutional Neural Network.

The infectious coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has become a great threat to global human health. Timely and rapid detection of COVID-19 cases is very crucial to control its spreading through isolation measures as well as for proper treatment. Though the real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test is a widely used technique for COVID-19 infection, recent researches suggest chest computed tomography (CT)-based screening as an effective substitute in cases of time and availability limitations of RT-PCR.

Spontaneous Pneumothorax: A Tale of Two Unique Cases.

We herein present two cases of spontaneous pneumothorax. The first one is occurring in an elderly female who has an extensive history of smoking and an underlying chronic obstructive lung disease, whereas the second case represents a congenital bleb in a male patient who has no other underlying pulmonary disorder. Both cases presented to our facility with a spontaneous pneumothorax following pulmonary bleb rupture.

Significance: IQOS is a heated tobacco product that has been widely advertised by Philip Morris International (PMI) as a reduced-exposure product compared with cigarettes. Reduced exposure results from reduced emission of toxicants which could be influenced by product constituents and user behaviour. This study aims to assess the influence of user behaviour, including device cleaning and puffing parameters, on toxicant emissions from IQOS.

: The Lions Quest Skills for Adolescence (LQSFA) is an evidence-based social and emotional learning program for school students. It is implemented as a teacher-led extracurricular activity for children aged 10-15 years. From 2019 to 2022, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in collaboration with Lions Clubs International Foundation, implemented the LQSFA in 41 schools in Croatia.

Did JUUL alter the content of menthol pods in response to US FDA flavour enforcement policy?

Background: The JUUL electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) remains popular in the USA and has a big prevalence among youth. In response to the popularity of JUUL and similar devices among youth, the US Food and Drug Administration issued in February 2020 an enforcement policy to remove all flavoured cartridge/pod-based e-cigarettes from the market except for tobacco and menthol. Subsequent studies showed that some users of the now-removed flavoured JUUL pods (especially cool mint) switched to menthol-flavoured JUUL pods with similar satisfaction.

Assessing toxicant emissions from e-liquids with DIY additives used in response to a potential flavour ban in e-cigarettes.

Significance: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) aerosolise liquids that contain nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerol and appealing flavours. In the USA, regulations have limited the availability of flavoured e-cigarettes in pod-based systems, and further tightening is expected. In response, some e-cigarette users may attempt to make their e-liquids (do-it-yourself, DIY).
