Assessing awareness and knowledge level of clubfoot among a rural city population in Saudi Arabixsa: A cross-sectional study.

Purpose: Clubfoot is among the most common musculoskeletal congenital anomalies. Poor understanding of clubfoot can cause lack of awareness that leads to complications in treating this condition because of late medical intervention. This is considered as a significant public health problem, especially in communities where the burden of clubfoot deformity remains unrecognized.

Optimizing pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis use in pediatric orthopedic surgical patients through implementation of a perioperative venous thromboembolism risk screening tool.

Background: Although rare, venous thromboembolic events (VTE) are a significant challenge in pediatric orthopedic surgical patients (POSP). A VTE thromboprophylaxis screening tool was developed and implemented in POSPs at the IWK Health Centre since October 2016.

Objectives: This retrospective cohort study was designed to evaluate and assess the impact of the VTE thromboprophylaxis screening tool in terms of use of thromboprophylaxis in POSP.

Kyphectomy in Myelomeningocele for Severe Early-Onset Kyphosis Using Distal Intravertebral Fixation and Thoracic Growing Rods.

Unlabelled: Most kyphectomy techniques require distal dissection of the bifid posterior spinal elements for implants placement in the thoracolumbar/pelvic regions, traversing the scarred tissue associated with previous MMC closure, thereby theoretically increasing the risk of wound complications. The technique avoids the MMC scar but does not reliably facilitate thoracic growth for early-onset kyphosis. This study aims to report the technique and outcomes of a combined Halifax kyphectomy (resection of the apical vertebrae with distal anterior multilevel vertebral body fixation) and thoracic growing rod construct used to treat early-onset symptomatic gibbus in a patient with myelomeningocele (MMC).

Brace treatment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: risk factors for failure-a literature review.

Brace treatment is the most common nonoperative treatment for the prevention of curve progression in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The success reported in level 1 and 2 clinical trials is approximately 75%. The aim of this review was to identify the main risk factors that significantly reduce success rate of brace treatment.

New Technologies in Pediatric Spine Surgery.

Spinal fusion in young children for treatment of early onset scoliosis is not optimal because it limits growth and contributes to long-term lung compromise. Various types of growth-friendly spinal implants and newer technologies have been introduced in the past few years. Similarly, in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, fusion decreases spinal mobility and may lead to development of adjacent level disc degeneration.

Hoffa's fracture of the medial femoral condyle in a child treated with open reduction and internal fixation: A case report.

Background: Hoffa's fracture is a coronal oriented fracture of the femoral condyles. Isolated coronal fracture of medial femoral condyle with intact lateral femoral condyle is extremely rare in the pediatric patients. There are only few cases of a medial femoral condyle Hoffa's fracture in a skeletally immature patient that have been reported in the literature.
