Hidden colon adenocarcinoma diagnosed from mouth metastasis: case report and literature review.

Background: We report an unusual case of metastatic colon adenocarcinoma to the maxilla as an initial clinical sign of the disease, this being the second case reported in the palate. In addition, we show an extensive review of the literature, with clinical cases of adenocarcinoma with metastasis to the mouth.

Case Presentation: An 80-year-old man complained of "swelling on the palate" with a 3-week evolution time.

Intraosseous neurilemoma of the mandible with unusual multilocular presentation: a case report.

This case report describes an intraosseous neurilemoma, observed radiographically as a multilocular lesion, in a 12-year-old patient. Physical examination revealed facial asymmetry, swelling on the right side of the mandibular body, and bone expansion in the region of the base of the buccal sulcus. Panoramic radiography revealed a multilocular radiolucency on the right side of the mandibular body in the periapical region extending from the distal region of the first premolar root to the second molar and adjacent to the third molar.

Effect of DLC Films with and without Silver Nanoparticles Deposited On Titanium Alloy.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) film is a biocompatible hard coating material that can prevent the leaching of metal ions. This study evaluates the structural characteristics of DLC, with and without silver nanoparticles, deposited by plasma (PECVD) on titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) and bone formation in contact with DLC films. Sixty Ti-6Al-4V samples were used divided in: uncoated, coated with DLC and coated with DLC-Ag.

Vascular leiomyoma in the oral cavity - Report of two cases.

Vascular leiomyomas (VL) are benign lesions of perivascular origin. We report two new cases and discuss their clinical, histological and immunohistochemical characteristics, in order to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of such lesions. The patients, both male, presented asymptomatic nodules located in the bottom of the labial sulcus and buccal mucosa.

Cyclosporine A - Induced gingival overgrowth and proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression in experimental periodontitis.

Unlabelled: The most important microscopic characteristic of Cyclosporine A-induced gingival overgrowth is fibroepithelial hyperplasia.

Objective: The objective was to investigate the influence of previous exposure to Cyclosporine A over gingival epithelium in experimental periodontitis in rats.

Methods: Twenty Wistar rats with 12 weeks-old were divided into four groups with 5 animals each: Control Group (CG); Cyclosporine Group (CsAG); Ligature group (LG) and Cyclosporine and Ligature Group (CsALG).

In vitro and in vivo biological performance of porous Ti alloys prepared by powder metallurgy.

Titanium (Ti) and Ti-6 Aluminium-4 Vanadium alloys are the most common materials in implants composition but β type alloys are promising biomaterials because they present better mechanical properties. Besides the composition of biomaterial, many factors influence the performance of the biomaterial. For example, porous surface may modify the functional cellular response and accelerate osseointegration.

A mixed form of intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia in an uncommon location: case and literature review.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is an unusual benign, non-neoplastic vascular lesion that usually occurs in skin, but is uncommon in the oral cavity. Herein, we review the pertinent literature of oraiiPEH and report a new mixed form. A 61-year- old man presented with an ulcerated nodule in the lingual portion of the gingiva related to the left mandibular canine.

Presence of mast cells and the expression of metalloproteinase 9 in the gingiva of ovariectomized rats with periodontal disease.

Background: The host's answer has an important role in periodontal disease, and the mast cells have a prime role. Such cells seem to be influenced by estrogen deficiency. The objective was to evaluate the mast cells and the expression of metalloproteinase(MMP)-9 in periodontal disease induced in ovariectomized rats.

Chondroid Tenosynovial Giant Cell Tumor of the Temporomandibular Joint: A Rare Case Report.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumor of diffuse type (TGCT-d) or pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a locally aggressive lesion that mostly affects the joints of long bones. Chondroid tenosynovial giant cell tumor (CTGCT) or PVNS with chondroid metaplasia is a rare distinct subset of synovial tumors that has a predilection for the TMJ. We report a rare case of CTGCT in the TMJ, initially misdiagnosed as temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

Different Expression of Aldehyde Dehydrogenases 1A1 and 2 in Oral Leukoplakia With Epithelial Dysplasia and in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) may develop malignant characteristics and transform into oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in a range of 1% to 2% of cases. Chronic alcohol consumption is associated with carcinogenesis, but its mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated. ALDH1A1 and 2, isoenzymes responsible for aldehyde oxidation involved in ethanol metabolism may be associated with the development of malignant head and neck neoplasms.

Oral Adenosquamous Carcinoma Mimicking a Pyogenic Granuloma: a Challenging Diagnosis.

Adenosquamous carcinoma is an aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma. This report describes a case of adenosquamous carcinoma with clinical features of a benign lesion and discusses the differential diagnoses, especially regarding histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. A 45-year-old male was referred to our outpatient clinic complaining about a rapid-growing enlargement in hard palate.

Correlation of intratumoral lymphatic microvessel density, vascular endothelial growth factor C and cell proliferation in salivary gland tumors.

Lymphatic dissemination is one of the most important pathways for metastasis in many solid tumors, including head and neck carcinomas. The lymphatic growth of cancer has been used as a significant independent adverse prognostic factor and provides information about tumor progression. Salivary gland tumors present different prognoses and have the ability to develop metastases; however, this information regarding the lymphatic spread is scarce.

Oral focal mucinosis: review of the literature and two case reports.

Oral focal mucinosis is a rare condition, clinically characterized by an asymptomatic swelling, without distinct, specific features, which occurs predominantly in adults of the female gender. Its clinical aspect leads to various differential diagnoses, and final diagnosis is only possible by means of histopathological exam, in which a well-delimited myxomatous area containing mucinous material is observed. In the present study, a review of the English-language literature about the lesion, was conducted, covering the period from 1974 to March 2015.

Graphite oral tattoo: case report.

Pigmented oral lesions compose a large number of pathological entities, including exogenous pigmentat oral tattoos, such as amalgam and graphite tattoos. We report a rare case of a graphite tattoo on the palate of a 62-year-old patient with a history of pencil injury, compare it with amalgam tattoos, and determine the prevalence of oral tattoos in our Oral Pathology Service. We also compare the clinical and histological findings of grafite and amalgam tattoos.

Spindle Cell Lipoma Occurring in the Buccal Mucosa: An Unusual Location of This Benign Lipomatous Neoplasm.

Spindle cell lipoma is a benign lipomatous neoplasm, which rarely occurs in the oral cavity. The aims of this paper are to report a case of spindle cell lipoma located in buccal mucosa and discuss the main clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical findings of this entity. Thus, we report a 4-year history of an asymptomatic smooth surface nodule in an elderly Caucasian man with clinical hypothesis of fibroma.

Porous titanium and Ti-35Nb alloy: effects on gene expression of osteoblastic cells derived from human alveolar bone.

Tests on titanium alloys that possess low elastic modulus, corrosion resistance and minimal potential toxicity are ongoing. This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of human osteoblastic cells cultured on dense and porous Titanium (Ti) samples comparing to dense and porous Ti-35 Niobium (Ti-35Nb) samples, using gene expression analysis. Scanning electronic microscopy confirmed surface porosity and pore interconnectivity and X-ray diffraction showed titanium beta-phase stabilization in Ti-35Nb alloy.

An Isolated Phlebolith on the Lip: An Unusual Case and Review of the Literature.

Background. Calcified thrombi are a common finding, especially in the pelvic veins. There are generally multiple thrombi, and they are generally associated with vascular malformations.

Titanium-35niobium alloy as a potential material for biomedical implants: In vitro study.

Research on new titanium alloys and different surface topographies aims to improve osseointegration. The objective of this study is to analyze the behavior of osteogenic cells cultivated on porous and dense samples of titanium-niobium alloys, and to compare them with the behavior of such type of cells on commercial pure titanium. Samples prepared using powder metallurgy were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and metallographic and profilometer analyses.

Osteoblast response to porous titanium and biomimetic surface: In vitro analysis.

Objective: This study analyzed the behavior of human osteoblasts cultured on porous titanium specimens, with and without biomimetic treatment, compared to dense titanium.

Design: The experiment had seven groups: Group 1: cells cultured on polystyrene of culture plate wells; Group 2: cells cultured on dense titanium specimen; Group 3: specimen with 33.79% of pores; Group 4: 41.

Oral syphilis: report of three cases and characterization of the inflammatory cells.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum. This study reports 3 cases of syphilis and highlights the importance of identifying oral lesions for its final diagnosis. Case 1: a 48-year-old male patient presented with a bleeding ulcer in the lower lip.

Study of MDM2 and SUMO-1 expression in actinic cheilitis and lip cancer.

Actinic cheilitis exhibits a potential of malignant transformation in 10-20 % of cases. The objective of this study was to compare the expression of MDM2 and SUMO-1 proteins between actinic cheilitis (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip. The sample consisted of lower lip mucosa specimens obtained from cases with a clinical and histopathological diagnosis of AC (n = 26) and SCC (n = 25) and specimens of labial semi-mucosa (n = 15) without clinical alterations or inflammation.

Evaluation of different periods of estrogen replacement onset in the tibia of ovariectomized rats.

Background And Aims: Estrogen deficiency results in increased bone turnover and can lead to osteoporosis. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) seems to be the most effective means of reducing bone loss and fractures. However, the effects of the period of HRT onset on bone tissue require further elucidation.

Alcoholic and isocaloric diet, but not ovariectomy, influence the apoptosis of bone cells within the alveolar bone crest of rats.

Objective: Studies suggest that chronic alcoholism as well as oestrogen deficiencies may affect bones in general, including alveolar bone and, by doing so, increase individuals' susceptibility to develop progressive periodontal disease. This paper aims to verify the influence of chronic alcoholism and/or oestrogen deficiencies in the apoptosis of bone cells of the alveolar bone crest region in rats.

Design: Initially, 54 rats were divided into ovariectomized (Ovx) and Sham operated (Sham) groups.
