We have assessed the relative amount of genetics education at each of the 3 levels of medical training in Germany, namely the undergraduate, postgraduate and continuous medical education stages. Our data show that genetics is ill represented at all levels. Written examinations at the end of the relevant section at the undergraduate level include very few questions related to medical genetics, and particularly few in subjects such as pathology, internal medicine and gynaecology and obstetrics.

We generated different retroviral vectors for controlled gene expression in liver cells, in which the regulatory elements were arranged in different patterns. Only the organization of the tetracycline system in an autoregulatory loop in the sense orientation results in high retroviral titres and in tight regulation of gene expression in highly differentiated hepatoma cells.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is able to kill a broad spectrum of tumor cells but appears to be nontoxic to most normal cells. Because there are conflicting data about the hepatotoxicity of TRAIL, we investigated the physiological function of TRAIL and its receptors in the liver. Hepatocytes are sensitive for FasL- and TRAIL-mediated apoptosis in vitro, but TRAIL induces no apoptosis in healthy livers in vivo.
