Social determinants of health (SDHs) have a substantial impact on patient care and outcomes globally, both in low- to middle-income countries and in high-income countries. In the clinic, lack of availability of diagnostic tools, inequities in access to care, and challenges obtaining and adhering to prescribed treatment plans may further compound these issues. This article addresses a case of rhinitis in the context of SDHs and inequities in care that may affect various communities and populations around the world.

Article Synopsis
  • Large-scale statistical analyses identify disease-gene relationships but fail to accurately represent how specific genetic variations affect observable traits and disease mechanisms.
  • The study focuses on the SATB1 gene, showing that different types of variants lead to similar yet distinct neurodevelopmental disorders, revealing notable genotype-phenotype relationships.
  • Variants causing strong chromatin binding lead to severe disorders, while those causing mild effects highlight the need for detailed studies on specific mutations to better understand the complexities of genetic diseases.

Serum Peanut-specific-IgE (PN-sIgE) and peanut-component-resolved-diagnostics (CRD) are often ordered simultaneously in the evaluation for peanut allergy. Results often guide the plans for peanut oral challenge. However, the clinical utility of CRD at different total PN-sIgE levels is unclear.

Background: Identifying clinical features associated with difficult-to-control asthma will help address overall control and more-effective asthma management.

Objective: To evaluate our clinical observation that the proportion of patients who are overweight or obese is significantly higher in patients with difficult-to-control asthma than in patients with well-controlled asthma.

Methods: This was a retrospective chart review of 400 patients, ages 5 to 18 years.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Yasmin Hamzavi-Abedi"

  • - Yasmin Hamzavi-Abedi's research primarily focuses on the intersection of social determinants of health and various medical conditions, including rhinitis, illustrating the impact of these determinants on patient care and outcomes globally, particularly in addressing inequities in treatment access.
  • - Her studies explore the genetic basis of neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically how different SATB1 mutations lead to distinct pathophysiological mechanisms, thereby enhancing understanding of genotype-phenotype correlations in these conditions.
  • - Additionally, she investigates clinical practices in allergy diagnosis, assessing the utility of peanut-specific IgE and component-resolved diagnostics to better inform management strategies for children with peanut allergies, and analyzes pediatric obesity's impact on asthma control in younger patients.
