Article Synopsis
  • - Rabies prevention is critical because the disease is fatal once symptoms appear, highlighting the importance of community awareness, mass dog vaccination, and effective post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) strategies.
  • - PEP consists of several steps, including wound washing, assessing the need for rabies treatment, administering immunoglobulin if necessary, starting a vaccination regimen, and maintaining clear communication with patients throughout the process.
  • - The WHO-recommended 1-week intradermal vaccination regimen is safe and offers benefits in terms of cost and efficiency, emphasizing the need for strong doctor-patient communication and knowledge sharing among healthcare providers to prevent rabies deaths.

Introduction: Dog-mediated rabies is enzootic in Vietnam, resulting in at least 70 reported human deaths and 500,000 human rabies exposures annually. In 2016, an integrated bite cases management (IBCM) based surveillance program was developed to improve knowledge of the dog-mediated rabies burden in Phu Tho Province of Vietnam.

Methods: The Vietnam Animal Rabies Surveillance Program (VARSP) was established in four stages: (1) Laboratory development, (2) Training of community One Health workers, (3) Paper-based-reporting (VARSP 1.

Article Synopsis
  • Integrated Bite Case Management (IBCM) in Haiti involves a multi-sectoral approach to manage animal bites and reduce rabies deaths, transitioning from paper-based methods (pIBCM) established in 2013 to an electronic app (eIBCM) introduced in 2018.
  • An evaluation of both systems from January 2013 to August 2019 compared their data quality, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency, revealing significant improvements in eIBCM, such as faster data transmission and increased data variables collected per investigation.
  • eIBCM was found to be more cost-effective ($1,247 per death averted) and efficient compared to pIBCM ($2,692 per death averted), with 100% of

Rabies is one of the most lethal infectious diseases, with those living in Asia and Africa having the highest risk of dying from rabies. We conducted a knowledge, attitudes and practices survey in urban and peri-urban areas of Bangladesh to describe canine bite rates, rabies knowledge, and healthcare seeking behaviors and barriers to human and dog vaccination. A bite risk assessment score (BRAS) and healthcare-seeking behavior score (HSBS) was calculated for each bite victim.

Dog-rabies elimination programs have typically relied upon parenteral vaccination at central-point locations; however, dog-ownership practices, accessibility to hard-to-reach sub-populations, resource limitations, and logistics may impact a country's ability to reach the 70% coverage goal recommended by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and World Health Organization (WHO). Here we report the cost-effectiveness of different dog-vaccination strategies during a dog-rabies outbreak in urban and peri-urban sections of Croix-des-Bouquets commune of the West Department, Haiti, in 2016. Three strategies, mobile static point (MSP), mobile static point with capture-vaccinate-release (MSP + CVR), and door-to-door vaccination with oral vaccination (DDV + ORV), were applied at five randomly assigned sites and assessed for free-roaming dog vaccination coverage and total population coverage.
