Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common bacterial infections with uropathogenic (UPEC) being the most prevalent causative agent in both complicated and uncomplicated UTIs. Antibiotic resistance among UPEC has been already demonstrated against a wide variety of antibiotics and the situation is continuing to deteriorate increasing the rate of recurrence and the difficulty of treatment and prophylaxis. Recently, a big attention has been paid to non-antibiotic approaches as an alternative to conventional antibiotics.

Arteriovenous dysplasia is rather uncommon disease, quite often leading to severe complications even in young age. Involvement of the osseous apparatus into the pathological process is frequently associated with the problem of amputation of the affected limb. Therefore, salvage of the extremity while removing arteriovenous shunt and trophic impairments is an extremely important clinical task.

The reconstruction problem for periodic (arbitrary profiled within a period) boundary between two homogeneous media is considered. Our approach to the solution of the inverse problem is based on the Tikhonov regularization technique, which requires successive selection of the boundaries on the basis of multiple solutions of the direct problem of wave diffraction by the candidate boundaries. The analytical numerical C method has been chosen as a simple but rather efficient tool for the direct problem solving.

Article Synopsis
  • - Shwachman-Diamond syndrome is a rare inherited condition that causes issues like pancreatic insufficiency, low white blood cell counts, bone marrow problems, and physical growth delays, with an occurrence rate of 1 in 10,000 to 20,000 births.
  • - The disorder has been linked to mutations in the SBDS gene, which have been identified in recent years.
  • - A case study of a 28-year-old male highlights typical symptoms, including severe pancreatic insufficiency, neutropenia, physical growth delays, and confirmed diagnosis through genetic testing.

Respiration hydrogen analyzer H2Rate has been used in pilot examinations of a group of students. This method for noninvasive diagnosis of small intestinal diseases promotes proper interpretation of the results. Free hydrogen level in the exhaled air increases as a result of lactulose (diagnostic agent) cleavage by enteric microflora within about 3 h.

Experiments with passive transfer of immunocompetent cell and serum demonstrated suppression of tumor growth after transfer of splenocytes from animals immunized with Trypanosoma cruzi. The nonspecific constituent of antitumor effect of immunocompetent cells was detected. The previously reported oncoprotective effect of mucins 2 and 3 was not confirmed.

This paper focuses on scatterometry problems arising in lithography production of periodic gratings. Namely, the paper introduces a theoretical and numerical-modeling-oriented approach to scatterometry problems and discusses its capabilities. The approach allows for reliable detection of deviations in gratings' critical dimensions (CDs) during the manufacturing process.

The incidence of Helicobacter pylori infection is analyzed by the results of screening of first- and fourth-year students of Moscow Institute of Foreign Affairs using HelicoSense Scientific breath test system. Age-related dynamics of the infection in patients examined for the first time has been traced. The data on infection rates in patients after eradication therapy are presented.

Changes in the cell wall of yeast-like fungi Candida albicans caused by bacterial enzyme lyticase were studied under an electron microscope. The results were compared with the findings on phagocytosis of lyticase-treated Candida albicans by rat alveolar macrophages. It was shown that destruction of the mannan and fibrous outer layers of the cell wall of yeast-like fungi treated with the enzyme led to the release of intracellular organelles and their content.

Context: Knowing the collaterals is essential for a spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy with resection of the splenic vessels.

Objective: To ascertain the sources of the blood supply to the spleen after a spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy with resection of the splenic vessels.

Methods: Perfusion of the cadaveric left gastric and right gastroepiploic arteries with methylene blue after occlusion of all the arteries except the short gastric arteries (n=10).

Context: Duodenal dystrophy is a rare disease, characterized by the chronic inflammation of the aberrant pancreatic tissue in the duodenal wall.

Case Reports: Two middle-aged men were admitted with upper abdominal pain of several months duration, periodic nausea and vomiting after meals, intermittent jaundice and weight loss. A diagnosis of cystic dystrophy of the vertical part of the duodenum without chronic inflammation of the orthotopic pancreas was established in both cases by multi-detector computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and endosonography.

Context: It is important to recognize arterial variants in the preoperative planning of extended pancreatic resections. The absence of surgical confirmation of radiological data is a limitation of the majority of angiographic or CT-angiographic studies of celiac and mesenteric arterial anatomy.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to test the accuracy of CT angiography in delineating the arterial architecture by comparing the resultant 3D images with findings at surgery and determining the frequency of different celiac and mesenteric arterial anatomy variants.

In this paper we represent a number of new physical results obtained using time domain methods and based on equivalent replacement of initially open electrodynamic problems with closed ones. These results prove the high efficiency and reliability of the approach, being grounded in our companion paper in this issue.

Frequency domain methods allow us to simulate and study efficiently only some of the periodic structures that are widespread in optics and spectroscopy. Time domain approaches could be more effective, but their deployment is held back by a number of unsolved problems associated mainly with a proper truncation of the computation space in the so-called open problems. This paper is devoted to analysis of these problems in the 2-D case (infinite one-dimensionally periodic semitransparent and reflecting gratings in the field of pulsed E- and H-polarized waves).

A sampling of lactobacilli from the German National Collection of Microorganisms and L. fermentum 90 TS-4 (21) reference strain clone 3 (Russian Federation) were studied. The results indicate that the receptors on the surface of lactobacillus strains from the German collection had no structures complementary to type 1 fimbriae, though adhesins of some of them reacted with mannose and galactose receptors.

Six lactobacillus species and 4 clones of one of them were studied in order to clear out the ratio between the adhesion capacities of concanavalin A-reactive glycoprotein adhesins on the surface of the bacterial cell and glycoprotein adhesins released into the broth during culturing in liquid nutrient media. The adhesive activity of cultures is largely determined by the strain rather than species appurtenance. Elimination of glycoprotein adhesins from the bacterial cell and their antagonistic activity towards Candida albicans were demonstrated in specific interactions of glycoprotein adhesins with immune serum and concanavalin A.

We examined production of the protein-lipoteichoic complex detectable by concanavalin A in six lactobacillus strains. A correlation was found between detection of this complex by both reaction with concanavalin A and agglutination with strain-specific antiserum. The cultures were characterized by expression of different types of adhesins.
