Article Synopsis
  • Hypobaric hypoxia, a condition at high altitudes, causes pupil constriction and expands the anterior chamber angle, possibly safe for those with narrow angles, necessitating further examination.
  • This study measured eye parameters before and after short-term exposure to hypobaric hypoxia in 25 healthy lowlanders using advanced optical technology.
  • Results showed a significant decrease in intraocular pressure and pupil diameter, along with other changes in anterior segment parameters, while some measurements remained unchanged.

The elevation in the optic nerve sheath (ONS) pressure (ONSP) due to microgravity-induced headward fluid shift is the primary hypothesized contributor to SANS. This longitudinal study aims to quantify the axial plane of the optic nerve subarachnoid space area (ONSSA), which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and expands with elevated ONSP during and after head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest (BR). 36 healthy male volunteers (72 eyes) underwent a 90-day strict 6° HDT BR.

In arid regions, land development and degradation (LDD) is sustained by the undesirable land development, human production and living, and climate change. Therefore, the understanding of LDD processes and their driving mechanism in the arid or semi-arid regions is significant to guarantee the sustainable development of ecological environment. This study explored the critical LDD processes in the Heihe River Basin (HRB) during 1990-2010 with the spatio-temporal evaluation of critical land use dynamics and its land quality changing trends.

Ecological environment assessment can not only provide significant references for effective solutions to regional ecological problems, but also promote the benign interaction of socio-economic-ecological development. This study selected the Heihe River Basin (HRB) as the typical area to comprehensively evaluate the ecological environment from 2010 to 2030 based on the dynamics of land system (DLS) model, which is coupled with the biological abundance index (BAI), vegetation coverage index (VCI), water density index (WDI), land degradation index (LDI), and eco-environment quality index (EQI). The results indicate that the BAI and VCI will be high in the south and east, low in the north and west in general.

A novel torsion apparatus for micro-scale specimens is developed based on electromagnetism, in which a coil-magnet component is used for actuating and torque measuring. When the current gets through the coil, the torque, produced by Ampere force, can be easily measured by recording the current. A laser displacement sensor is applied to measure the rotation angle.
