Article Synopsis
  • * It found that DBC's structural changes after adsorption led to decreased concentrations of reactive species and an increased light screening effect, impacting the effectiveness of photodegradation.
  • * Interestingly, DBC can have both positive and negative effects on the breakdown of antibiotics, influenced by the chemical properties of the antibiotics and their interaction with DBC.

D-Phenyllactic acid (D-PLA) is a potent antimicrobial typically synthesized through chemical methods. However, due to the complexity and large pollution of these reactions, a simpler and more eco-friendly approach was needed. In this study, a strain for D-PLA biosynthesis was constructed, but the efficiency was restricted by the activity of D-lactate dehydrogenase (DLDH).

1,6-hexamethylenediamine (HMD) is an important precursor for nylon-66 material synthesis, while research on the bioproduction of HMD has been relatively scarce in scientific literature. As concerns about climate change, environmental pollution, and the depletion of fossil fuel reserves continue to grow, the significance of producing fundamental chemicals from renewable sources is becoming increasingly prominent. In recent investigations, the bioproduction of HMD from adipic acid has been reported but with lingering challenges concerning costly raw materials and low yields.

l-Pipecolic acid (L-PA), an essential chiral cyclic nonprotein amino acid, is gaining prominence in the food and pharmaceutical sectors due to its wide-ranging biological and pharmacological properties. Historically, L-PA has been synthesized chemically for commercial purposes. This study introduces a novel and efficient microbial production method for L-PA using engineered strain BY4743.

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is the more photoactive component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool, which plays a dual role in the photoconversion of aquatic contaminants, acting as both a photosensitizer and an inhibitor. However, little is known about the more systematic mechanism by which DBC exhibits a dual effect, which is closely related to the structure composition of DBC. In this study, the differences in characteristics of DBC obtained from 300 °C and 500 °C were compared via UV-vis absorption spectrum, Fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectra (3D-EEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and evaluated the promoting and inhibiting effects of DBC on ofloxacin (OFL) photodegradation.

5-aminovalanoic acid (5AVA) can be used as the precursor of new plastics nylon 5 and nylon 56, and is a promising platform compound for the synthesis of polyimides. At present, the biosynthesis of 5-aminovalanoic acid generally is of low yield, complex synthesis process and high cost, which hampers large-scale industrial production. In order to achieve efficient biosynthesis of 5AVA, we developed a new pathway mediated by 2-keto-6-aminohexanoate.

The 1st western China symposium on the international frontier of synthetic biomanufacturing was successfully held on July 8-10 in 2022. The conference is firstly launched by Professor Dan Wang in Chongqing University, and will be organized regularly every year by different universities in western China. The aim of this symposium is to show the cutting-edge knowledge of the synthetic biology developed in China and worldwide, provide a chance to meet international colleagues, and also to promote the academic and economic development of western China.

Background: Thrombocytopenia (TP) remains a challenge in clinical hematology. TP may have serious consequences, such as recurrent skin and mucosal bleeding and increased risk of intracranial and internal organ hemorrhage. However, effective and safe therapeutic drugs for the long-term management of TP are still lacking.

Purpose: Myocardial fibrosis (MF) is an unavoidable complication in patients with hypertensive heart disease. Valsartan, a widely used antihypertensive drug, was reported to inhibit MF. Deficiency in the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin) transporter gene has been proven to cause MF.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of systemic and complex autoimmune other disease characterized by chronic joint inflammation. Spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) inhibitors are regarded as an effective alternative to existing drugs for the treatment of this disease. However, studies evaluating fostamatinib, a new Syk inhibitor, are either invalid or insufficient.

Ten new dolabrane-type diterpenoids, notolutesins A-J (1-10), were isolated from the Chinese liverwort Notoscyphus lutescens, along with four known compounds. The structures of the new compounds were established on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data, and that of 1 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by comparing its experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism spectra.
