Tumor cells gain a survival/growth advantage by adapting their metabolism to respond to environmental stress, a process known as metabolic transformation. The best-known aspect of metabolic transformation is the Warburg effect, whereby cancer cells up-regulate glycolysis under aerobic conditions. However, other mechanisms mediating metabolic transformation remain undefined.

Objective: To construct virus-like particles of hepatitis B core antigen, with HBsAg "a" epitope exposed on the surface.
Methods: Hepatitis B surface antigen "a" epitope were inserted into the Hepatitis B core antigen, between the 78th (Asp) and the 79th (Pro) amino acids. The gene was synthesized after the codon optimized, then it was ligated to the express vector after been enzyme digest.
Objective: • To compare the expressions of common fibrosis-relevant genes in hydronephrosis-induced fibrotic renal tissues and normal human renal tissues, thereby providing insights into the cellular and molecular mechanisms of renal fibrosis resulting from hydronephrosis.
Patients And Methods: • A total of 12 extensively fibrotic renal tissue samples from patients with hydronephrosis (H-group) and six normal renal tissue samples from patients who underwent nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma (N-group), along with their clinical data, were collected at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University in China between October 2005 and August 2007. • These tissue samples were compared for their transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)/bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathway-related gene profiles using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) microarray.
Objective: To report the outcomes of patients treated with the anterior capsule preservation technique used in surgical management for severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Methods: Anterior capsule was preserved following pars plana lensectomy or fragmentation during vitrectomy for cataract patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, all eyes presented tractional and tractional/rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and involvement of posterior retina. Postoperatively, the transparency of anterior capsule was classified into A, B, C and D degrees according to the photographic record.
In the present study, the anxiolytic and sedative-hypnotic activities of polygalasaponins extracted from Polygala tenuifolia Willdenow (Polygalaceae) were determined in mice using hole-board, elevated plus maze, open field, and sodium pentobarbital-induced hypnosis tests. Moreover, the acute toxicity of polygalasaponins was also estimated in mice. Sixty minutes after p.

Glucagon plays a major regulatory role in controlling hypoglycemia in vivo, but its short half-life and hyperglycemic effects prevent its therapeutic use for non-acute applications. The goal of this study was to identify a modified form of glucagon suitable for prophylactic treatment of hypoglycemia without increasing baseline blood glucose levels.

Objective: To determine the main genotype of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Xinjiang.
Methods: 200 HBsAg positive serum specimens were detected from more than 2000 serum of Xinjiang inhabitants, and HBV S gene was detected by using nPCR amplifying, and compared with the standard S region HBV nucleotide sequences of genotypes A-H retrieved from GenBank, then analyzed and drawn the polygenetic tree by MEGA3 software.

Background: Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO), a rare, bilateral, diffuse granulomatous uveitis, usually occurs after open globe injury or intraocular surgery. We sought to identify the risk factors for the development of SO after open globe injury and describe their demographic and clinical features and outcomes of treatments.
Methods: A retrospective study of inpatients with globe injury in 15 tertiary referral hospitals of China from January 2001 to December 2005 was conducted.

Objective: To investigate the effects of the tumor suppressor gene PTC on the growth inhibition and down-regulation of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) in pulmonary adenocarcinoma cell A549.
Methods: Pulmonary adenocarcinoma cell A549 were divided into wild type group, mutant type group, blank group and control group. They were transfected with wild-type PTC1 plasmids, mutant-PTC1 plasmids and blank plasmids, respectively.
Efficient and compact green-yellow laser output at 543 nm is generated by intracavity frequency doubling of a cw diode-pumped Nd:YVO(4) laser at 1086 nm under the condition of suppressing the higher gain transition near 1064 nm. With 14.5 W of diode pump power and the frequency-doubling crystal LiB(3)O(5), as high as 2.

We show that genetic fusion of an unstructured recombinant polypeptide of 864 amino acids, called XTEN, to a peptide or protein provides an apparently generic approach to extend plasma half-life. Allometric scaling suggests that a fusion of XTEN to the exenatide peptide should increase exenatide half-life in humans from 2.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) has led to recent outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in China, resulting in high mortality. In this study, several monoclonal antibodies were generated by immunizing mice with two synthetic peptides, SP55 and SP70, containing amino acids 163-177 and 208-222 of VP1. The specificities of the anti-EV71 peptide monoclonal antibodies were confirmed by Western blot analysis and immunocytochemistry against EV71 virus.

Objective: To prepare monoclonal antibodies (McAbs) against VP1 capsid protein of Enterovirus 71.
Methods: Two peptides, SP55 and SP70, containing amino acid 163-177 and 208-222 of VP1, were synthesized respectively. Immunized BALB/c mice with the synthetic peptides to establish the hybridoma cell strains secreting specific McAb to VP1.

L-serine-O-phosphate (L-SOP) is the immediate precursor to L-serine in the serine synthesis pathway and is also an agonist at the Group III metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs). L-SOP is produced by the enzyme phosphoserine aminotransferase (PSAT) and metabolized to L-serine by phosphoserine phosphatase (PSP). Using a novel analytical procedure, we show that L-SOP is present in rat whole brain, and that in transfected cells, it is substantially more potent than L-glutamate at the mGluR4 receptor subtype.

Most existing camera placement algorithms focus on coverage and/or visibility analysis, which ensures that the object of interest is visible in the camera's field of view (FOV). However, visibility, which is a fundamental requirement of object tracking, is insufficient for automated persistent surveillance. In such applications, a continuous consistently labeled trajectory of the same object should be maintained across different camera views.

Colon cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the world. Oxaliplatin, a third-generation platinum compound, is widely used in clinical chemotherapy of colon cancer. Although the mechanisms of the antitumor effect of Oxaliplatin have been investigated in recent years, the proteomic changes that are associated with the cellular response to this compound are poorly understood.

The peptide N-acetylaspartylglutamate (NAAG) is present in high concentrations in the mammalian central nervous system. Various mechanisms have been proposed for its action, including selective activation of the metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) subtype 3, its action at the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, or the production of glutamate by its hydrolysis catalyzed by an extracellular protease. To re-examine its agonist activity at mGluR3, we coexpressed human or rat mGluR3 with G protein inward rectifying channels in Xenopus laevis oocytes.
