ZEB1 is a transcription factor that induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition, tumor metastasis, and therapy resistance. ZEB1 protein is subject to ubiquitination and degradation, but the mechanism by which ZEB1 is stabilized in cells remains unclear. By screening a human deubiquitinase library, we identified USP51 as a deubiquitinase that binds, deubiquitinates, and stabilizes ZEB1.

Excessive lipid accumulation in adipose tissue is either the source of obesity or the cause and result of chronic local inflammation, and recent studies indicate that the accumulation may induce many other specialized immunologic features with macrophages and epidemic diseases. We analyze the effective stages of immune cells in adipose tissue, including macrophage recruitment, macrophage polarization, and macrophage-like phenotype preadipocyte possession to find optimal sites as drug targets. Subsequently, some main signaling pathways are summarized in this review, including the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway, the JNK signaling pathway, and a novel one, the Notch signaling pathway.

Fluorescent "turn-off" sensors based on water-soluble quantum dots (QDs) have drawn increasing attention owing to their unique properties such as high fluorescence quantum yields, chemical stability and low toxicity. In this work, a novel method based on the fluorescence "turn-off" model with water-soluble CdTe QDs as the fluorescent probes for differentiation of 29 different famous green teas is established. The fluorescence of the QDs can be quenched in different degrees in light of positions and intensities of the fluorescent peaks for the green teas.

Heterochromatin protein 1γ (CBX3) links histone methylation marks to transcriptional silence, DNA repair and RNA splicing, but a role for CBX3 in cancer remains largely unknown. In this study, we show that CBX3 in colon cancer cells promotes the progression of the cell cycle and proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Cell cycle (G1 phase to S phase) related gene CDK6 and p21 were further identified as targets of CBX3.

To identify novel genes that mediate cellular sensitivity and resistance to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), we performed a genome-wide genetic screening to identify altered susceptibility to 5-FU by Schizosaccharomyces pombe haploid nonessential gene deletion library containing 3004 deletion mutants. We identified 50 hypersensitive and 12 resistant mutants to this drug. Mutants sensitive or resistant to 5-FU were classified into various categories based on their putative functions.

Aims: Berberine (BBR) holds promising effect for neuronal injury in diabetes because its anti-apoptotic activity and our laboratory developed the Huang-Gui Solid Dispersion (HGSD) to improve oral bioavailability of BBR. However, anti-apoptotic effect and the mechanism of HGSD in the brain of diabetic mice are not clear. We hypothesized that the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway could exert a protective role in high glucose induced cellular apoptotic death via inducing autophagy and HGSD could inhibit apoptosis by activating AMPK/mTOR pathway.
