The Society for Pediatric Anesthesia launched the Women's Empowerment and Leadership Initiative (WELI) in 2018 to empower highly productive women pediatric anesthesiologists to achieve equity, promotion, and leadership. WELI is focused on six career development domains: promotion and leadership, networking, conceptualization and completion of projects, mentoring, career satisfaction, and sense of well-being. Proper regulation of microtubule (MT) stability and dynamics is vital for essential cellular processes, including axonal transportation and synaptic growth and remodeling in neurons. In the present study, we demonstrate that the Drosophila ankyrin repeat and KH domain-containing protein Mask negatively affects MT stability in both larval muscles and motor neurons. In larval muscles, loss-of-function of mask increases MT polymer length, and in motor neurons, loss of mask function results in overexpansion of the presynaptic terminal at the larval neuromuscular junctions (NMJs).

Research has shown that women have leadership ability equal to or better than that of their male counterparts, yet proportionally fewer women than men achieve leadership positions and promotion in medicine. The Women's Empowerment and Leadership Initiative (WELI) was founded within the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA) in 2018 as a multidimensional program to help address the significant career development, leadership, and promotion gender gap between men and women in anesthesiology. Human kidney organoid technology holds promise for novel kidney disease treatment strategies and utility in pharmacological and basic science. Given the crucial roles of the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and angiotensin II (ANG II) in the progression of kidney development and injury, we investigated the expression of RAS components and effects of ANG II on cell differentiation in human kidney organoids. The pituitary glycoprotein hormones, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), act through their cognate receptors to initiate a series of coordinated physiological events that results in germ cell maturation. The design, synthesis, characterization, and screening of a large, encoded thiazolidinone library are described. Two families of peptides that specifically bind the extracellular domain of the human type I interleukin I (IL-1) receptor were identified from recombinant peptide display libraries. Peptides from one of these families blocked binding of IL-lalpha to the type I IL-1 receptor with IC50 values of 45-140 microM. A cell-free, nonisotopic assay has been developed to discover molecules that compete with the natural ligands for binding to the active site of the Type-I interleukin-1 receptor. The key reagents are the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, a recombinant soluble form of the receptor (sIL-1R), and a specific anti-sIL-1R nonneutralizing monoclonal antibody (MAb79). A general method for expression, purification, immobilization, detection and radiolabeling of extracellular domains (ECD) of type I membrane proteins. The type I interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1RtI), the alpha-subunit of interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R alpha) and E-selectin are used as illustrative examples of cell surface receptors. Interleukin-1 (IL-1) molecules are cytokines involved in the acute-phase response against infection and injury. Three naturally occurring IL-1 molecules are known, two agonists: IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta, and one antagonist, the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra). We have reported an unusual cause of disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) in a patient with multiple injuries from blunt trauma. The source of continued hemorrhage remained elusive despite laparotomy and thoracotomy. Bleeding appeared to resolve only after discovery and treatment of infection due to Salmonella enteritidis, which the patient had contracted during a recent trip to Mexico.

Blunt chest trauma can result in significant cardiothoracic injury, which can include cardiac contusion, aortic injury, and myocardial valvular injury. Nineteen patients with no prior history of cardiac abnormalities who sustained severe blunt chest trauma and had widening of the mediastinum on chest radiographs were prospectively evaluated using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). In each instance TEE was performed without difficulty, excellent images were obtained of the aorta and heart, and no complications were noted.
