In the framework of the Laser Lightning Rod project, whose aim is to show that laser-induced filaments can guide lightning discharges over considerable distances, we study over a distance of 140 m the filaments created by a laser system with J-range pulses of 1 ps duration at 1 kHz repetition rate. We investigate the spatial evolution of the multiple filamentation regime using the fundamental beam at 1030 nm or using combination with the second and third harmonics. The measurements were made using both a collimated beam and a loosely focused beam.

The depth of the impactor below the free surface z_{N} first evolves linearly with the impact number N and then follows a power-law evolution z_{N}∝N^{1/3}. The depth reached by the cylinder after a given number of impacts is observed to increase with the impact energy, but to decrease with its diameter and the density of the granular medium.

We perform small-scale laboratory experiments where a tsunami-like wave is generated by the gravity-driven collapse of a subaerial granular column into water. We show that the maximal amplitude reached near-shore by the generated wave in our experiments is linked to the instantaneous immersed volume of grains and to the ultimate immersed deposit.

We study experimentally the influence of confinement on the penetration depth of impacting spheres into a granular medium contained in a finite cylindrical vessel. The presence of close lateral walls reduces the penetration depth, and the characteristic distance for these lateral wall effects is found to be of the order of one sphere diameter. The influence of the bottom wall is found to have a much shorter range.

The dense flow of air bubbles in a two-dimensional silo (through an aperture D) filled with a liquid is studied experimentally. A particle tracking technique has been used to bring out the main properties of the flow: displacements of the bubbles, transverse, and axial velocities. The behavior of the air bubbles is observed to present similarities with nondeformable solid grains in a granular flow.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFApparent mass (M(app)) measurements at the bottom of granular packings inside a vertical tube in relative motion are reported. They demonstrate that Janssen's model is valid over a broad range of velocities v. The variability of the measurements is lower than for static packings and the theoretical exponential increase of M(app) with the height of the packing is precisely followed (the corresponding characteristic screening length is of the order of the tube diameter).
