The gravity-driven membrane (GDM) system is an energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable water purification process; however, after prolonged operation, its membrane flux remains relatively low, making it necessary to adopt effective strategies for improving system performance. In this study, the effects of hydrostatic pressure (60, 100, 200 mbar) and pre-coating with aluminum-based flocs (ABF) on GDM flux and organic matter removal were investigated, and the regulatory mechanisms of the bio-cake layer were explored through interactions between morphological structure, composition and microbes. The results showed that the stable flux of the GDM-ABF system at a hydrostatic pressure of 60 mbar was almost equal to that at 100 mbar, and it outperformed higher hydrostatic pressure in organic matter removal, resulting in a more porous bio-cake layer structure.

Background: At the end of 2021, an epidemic of reproductive abnormalities in cows occurred in Jilin Province, China, posing an urgent need for a rapid diagnosis.

Results: To identify the cause of the disease, a total of 172 samples were collected from 21 dead calves and 45 aborting or pregnant cows in 10 farms across the province. Routine PCR or RT-PCR detection did not find any common abortion-related agents.

The impact of carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio on sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) initiated with different seed sludges for treating actual mariculture effluent was explored. Increasing the C/N ratio significantly enhanced the nitrogen removal efficiency, achieving average removal efficiency of 95% for ammonia nitrogen and 73% for total nitrogen at ratio of 30, while the impact of seed sludge was minimal. High C/N ratio promoted the secretion of tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS), which showed significant correlation with nitrogen removal.

Common respiratory viruses, including the human parainfluenza viruses, threaten human health seasonally and associate with the development of chronic lung diseases. Evidence suggests that these viruses can persist, but the sources of viral products in vivo and their impact on chronic respiratory diseases remain unknown. Using the murine parainfluenza virus Sendai, we demonstrate that viral protein and RNA persist in lung macrophages, type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and dendritic cells long after the infectious virus is cleared.

Methods: Herein we present 12 genetic variants identified in seven clinically well-characterized Chinese patients with CPS1 deficiency who were admitted to the Children's Medical Center of Peking University First Hospital from September 2014 to August 2023.
