Objective: Active surveillance (AS) offers a viable alternative to surgical intervention for the management of indolent papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), helping to minimize the incidence of unnecessary treatment. However, the broader adoption of AS is hindered by the need for more reliable diagnostic markers. This study aimed to identify the differences between indolent and progressive PTC and find new targets for biomarker development and therapeutic strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • Leaf dark respiration (R) is crucial for carbon cycling in forests but is often not quantified properly; this study examined how R relates to various leaf traits like maximum carboxylation capacity (V) across different forest types in China.
  • The research found that leaf magnesium and calcium concentrations are more relevant for explaining R variability than more common traits like leaf mass per area (LMA) and nitrogen (N) concentrations, but the relationships are generally weak and specific to each forest type.
  • Leaf spectroscopy proved to be a more effective method for predicting R compared to traditional trait relationships, revealing new traits with broader applicability and suggesting that spectroscopy could enhance models of plant respiration.

Water use efficiency (WUE) represents the trade-off between carbon assimilation and water loss in plants. It remains unclear how leaf stomatal and photosynthetic traits regulate the spatial variation of leaf WUE in different natural forest ecosystems. We investigated 43 broad-leaf tree species spanning from cold-temperate to tropical forests in China.

Three-dimensional (3D) phenotyping is important for studying plant structure and function. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has gained prominence in 3D plant phenotyping due to its ability to collect 3D point clouds. However, organ-level branch detection remains challenging due to small targets, sparse points, and low signal-to-noise ratios.

Objective: To explore the mechanism of anlotinib resistance in thyroid carcinoma.

Methods: We constructed an anlotinib-resistant thyroid carcinoma cell line and observed the effect of drug resistance on the functional activity of these cell lines. Transcriptome sequencing and metabolomic sequencing combined with biosynthesis analysis were used to explore and screen possible drug resistance regulatory pathways.

China's extensive planted forests play a crucial role in carbon storage, vital for climate change mitigation. However, the complex spatiotemporal dynamics of China's planted forest area and its carbon storage remain uncaptured. Here we reveal such changes in China's planted forests from 1990 to 2020 using satellite and field data.

Forest canopy structural complexity (CSC) plays a crucial role in shaping forest ecosystem productivity and stability, but the precise nature of their relationships remains controversial. Here, we mapped the global distribution of forest CSC and revealed the factors influencing its distribution using worldwide light detection and ranging data. We find that forest CSC predominantly demonstrates significant positive relationships with forest ecosystem productivity and stability globally, although substantial variations exist among forest ecoregions.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to understand if delaying surgery for low-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) increases the risk of local tumors spreading or multifocal disease.
  • Researchers categorized patients into two groups: those who underwent observation and those who had immediate surgery, analyzing the outcomes over different observation periods.
  • The results showed no significant differences in local metastasis rates between the two groups, suggesting that active surveillance can be a safe management option for patients with low-risk PTC.

China's massive wave of urbanization may be threatened by land subsidence. Using a spaceborne synthetic aperture radar interferometry technique, we provided a systematic assessment of land subsidence in all of China's major cities from 2015 to 2022. Of the examined urban lands, 45% are subsiding faster than 3 millimeters per year, and 16% are subsiding faster than 10 millimeters per year, affecting 29 and 7% of the urban population, respectively.

  • - Land surface phenology (LSP) is vital for understanding climate change impacts on ecosystems, yet the influence of biotic factors on LSP variation within local landscapes is still not well-studied.
  • - This research focused on four National Ecological Observatory Network sites to analyze how biotic factors, particularly functional traits of plants, affect the timing of seasonal changes (start and end of season) in LSP.
  • - Results showed that while plant functional types (PFTs) alone only accounted for a small percentage of variability in seasonal timing, incorporating functional traits significantly improved predictions, indicating that traits related to competition and productivity are key to understanding LSP variation.

Increasing drought frequency and severity in a warming climate threaten forest ecosystems with widespread tree deaths. Canopy structure is important in regulating tree mortality during drought, but how it functions remains controversial. Here, we show that the interplay between tree size and forest structure explains drought-induced tree mortality during the 2012-2016 California drought.

A 71-year-old woman with recurrent papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) was referred to our hospital. A computed tomography scan revealed extensive recurrence in the neck, invading sternocleidomastoid muscle, internal jugular vein, sternal end of the clavicle, strap muscle and skin; and lateral compartment and subclavian lymph nodes were also involved. Multiple pulmonary micrometastases also noticed.

Lung cancer is the malignant tumor with the highest mortality rate in the world. There is obvious heterogeneity within the tumor. Single cell sequencing technology enables scholars to obtain information about the cell type, status, subpopulation distribution and communication behavior between cells in the tumor microenvironment from the cellular level.

  • - This study investigates the effectiveness of various 3D sensing technologies for measuring canopy height (CH) in crops compared to traditional field measurements, highlighting the importance of CH in crop breeding and production.
  • - It compares data from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), backpack laser scanning (BLS), gantry laser scanning (GLS), and digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) across 1920 plots and 120 crop varieties, finding strong correlations between measurements.
  • - The research reveals that while all 3D sensing methods are reliable, those techniques demonstrate even higher heritability values for CH than traditional field measurements, suggesting they could improve accuracy in crop breeding applications.

Background: Management of the inferior parathyroid gland using total thyroidectomy (TT) with central lymph node dissection (CLND) is still controversial. Therefore, we evaluated the safety and effectiveness of single inferior parathyroid autotransplantation.

Methods: The clinical data of patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) who underwent TT with bilateral CLND from January 2018 to December 2020 were collected.

Understanding how plants adapt to spatially heterogeneous phosphorus (P) supply is important to elucidate the effect of environmental changes on ecosystem productivity. Plant P supply is concurrently controlled by plant internal conservation and external acquisition. However, it is unclear how climate, soil, and microbes influence the contributions and interactions of the internal and external pathways for plant P supply.

The COVID-19 outbreak triggered a serious and potentially lethal pandemic, resulting in massive health and economic losses worldwide. The most common clinical manifestations of COVID-19 patients are pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome, with a variety of complications. Multiple organ failure and damage, ultimately leading to patient death, are possible as a result of medication combinations, and this is exemplified by DILI.

  • The study aimed to summarize the treatment experiences of children with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and assess how initial surgeries impact recurrence and metastasis.
  • A retrospective analysis was performed on 64 pediatric PTC cases from a single hospital over eight years, revealing significant factors influencing reoperation, with central lymph node dissection identified as a critical risk factor.
  • The findings suggest a high rate of lymph node metastasis at diagnosis, recommending total thyroidectomy as the primary treatment for most children, with central lymph node dissection routinely included in the surgical approach.
