Anthocyanins, the important antioxidants and signaling molecules, are natural polyphenolic compounds widely present in plants and essential for plant defense. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying plant anthocyanin accumulation in relation to drought stress. A visible-light-mediated strategy is reported for the direct synthesis of polychlorinated vicinal diaryl alkanes from aryl alkenes and chloroform. In this approach, two haloalkyl radicals generated from chloroform via halogen atom transfer (XAT) and direct single electron transfer (SET) within the same photoredox catalysis cycle enable the 1,4-dichloromethyldimerization of alkenes. Besides chloroform, this strategy is applicable to carbon tetrachloride, bromotrichloromethane, and α-bromo carboxylic esters, yielding corresponding 1,4-disubstituted vicinal diaryl alkanes.

Based on the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers developed by whole genome resequencing (WGRS), the relationship and population genetic structure of 53 common apricot () varieties were analyzed to provide a theoretical basis for revealing the phylogenetic relationship and classification of the common apricot. Enhancing the transcriptional activation activity of transcription factors (TFs) has multiple applications in organism improvement, metabolic engineering, and other aspects of plant science, but the approaches remain unclear. Here, we used gene activation assays and genetic transformation to investigate the transcriptional activities of two MYB TFs, PRODUCTION OF ANTHOCYANIN PIGMENT 1 (AtPAP1) from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and EsMYBA1 from Epimedium (Epimedium sagittatum), and their synthetic variants in a range of plant species from several families. Using anthocyanin biosynthesis as a convenient readout, we discovered that homologous naturally occurring TFs showed differences in the transcriptional activation ability and that similar TFs induced large changes in the genetic program when heterologously expressed in different species.
