Introduction: Chronic inflammation is a recognized independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), highlighting the need for reliable inflammatory indicator to predict CVDs. As an inflammatory indicator which has been proved to have predictive value for prognosis of CVDs, neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) has obtained increasing attention, but further research is needed to confirm the relationship with mortality in the general population.

Method: This prospective cohort study included 21,317 individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2010, where baseline characteristics and NPAR level were extracted.

  • Scutellaria baicalensis and Coptis chinensis are traditional herbal medicines used to treat hyperlipidemia, but their combined effects and mechanisms are not fully understood.
  • This study aims to investigate how these herbs work together to combat high lipid levels in the blood through a series of experiments, including dietary modeling and various laboratory analyses.
  • The results indicate that the combination of berberine and baicalin significantly lowers harmful cholesterol levels and alters gene expression related to fatty acid breakdown in the liver, pointing to a promising herbal treatment for hyperlipidemia.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers have developed recombinant pseudorabies virus (PRV) that can express a full-length E2 protein, which is crucial for creating effective vaccines.
  • * The study shows that a modified full-length E2 protein can stimulate stronger immune responses in mice and rabbits, indicating potential for a new bivalent vaccine that protects against both PR and CSF.

Pseudorabies (PR) and classical swine fever (CSF) are economically important infectious diseases of pigs. Most pig farms in China are immunized against these two diseases. Here, we describe a stabilized E2 protein as an immunogen inserted into the PRV genome as a bivalent live virus-vectored vaccine.

() is a Chinese medicine plant whose bark and leaves are used in the treatment of some diseases such as inflammation, diarrhea and fever. However, metabolic signatures of seeds have not been studied. The seeds and bark of collected at the seed ripening stage were used for metabolite profiling analysis through the untargeted metabolomics approach.

Lung ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is induced by pulmonary artery occlusion and reperfusion. Lung IR injury commonly happens after weaning from extracorporeal circulation, lung transplantation, and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy; it is a lethal perioperative complication. A definite therapeutic intervention remains to be determined.

Steam explosion (SE) was a friendly environmentally pretreatment method. In this study, the effect of steam explosion (SE) pretreatment on structure and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of Ampelopsis grossedentata polysaccharides was evaluated. Two novel polysaccharides (AGP and AGP-SE) were extracted, isolated, purified and analyzed by NMR, FT-IR and methylation.

Article Synopsis
  • - Alzheimer's disease (AD) is marked by amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation, leading to cognitive decline, and the role of dendritic cell factor 1 (Dcf1) in this process remains unclear.
  • - Research using mouse and Drosophila models showed that knocking out Dcf1 reduced Aβ levels and improved memory function, while its expression worsened Aβ plaque formation and cognitive abilities.
  • - Targeting Dcf1 with antibodies decreased plaque size and reversed memory deficits in AD mice, suggesting that inhibiting Dcf1 could have therapeutic potential for Alzheimer's disease.

Single herbs and Chinese patent medicine preparations often have bad taste, such as bitterness and astringency, which is one of the key factors affecting patients' medication compliance, and would affect the therapeutic effect and restrict the extensive application in clinical practice. Therefore, how to make use of taste masking techniques to improve the bad taste of traditional Chinese medicines has become an important project. Through the collection and summarization of Chinese and foreign journals and papers in recent years, this paper discussed the generation mechanism of bitter taste, the new methods of masking bitter taste and the evaluation me-thods of bitter taste, in order to provide references for the taste masking of Chinese patent medicines preparations.

Refrigeration is commonly used to extend the storage life of "Nanguo" pears, but fruit in long-term refrigeration is prone to peel browning, which is related to membrane lipid degradation. To determine the mechanism of membrane lipid degradation, we identified two R2R3-MYB transcription factors (TFs), PuMYB21 and PuMYB54, from "Nanguo" pears, which were notably expressed in response to cold stress and during the peel-browning process. The results from yeast one-hybrid, electrophoretic mobility shift, and transient expression assays indicated that both PuMYB21 and PuMYB54 directly bind to the promoter of (a key enzyme catalyzing the hydrolysis of membrane phospholipids) and activate its expression, which probably enhances the degradation of membrane phospholipids and eventually results in peel browning.

Biological thiols (biothiols), an important kind of functional biomolecules, such as cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH), play vital roles in maintaining the stability of the intracellular environment. In past decades, studies have demonstrated that metabolic disorder of biothiols is related to many serious disease processes and will lead to extreme damage in human and numerous animals. We carried out a series of experiments to detect biothiols in biosamples, including bovine plasma and cell lysates of seven different cell lines based on a simple colorimetric method.
