This study investigated the effects of different external circuit loading mode on pollutants removal and power generation in microbial fuel cells (MFC). The results indicated that MFC exhibited distinct characteristics of higher maximum power density (P) (named MFC-HP) and lower P (named MFC-LP). And the capacitive properties of bioanodes may affect anodic electrochemistry.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores combining microbial fuel cells (MFC) with bio-electrochemical processes to enhance the recovery of membrane foulants while generating electricity from them.
  • - Results showed that the biodegradability of the foulants, such as polysaccharides and proteins, improved with optimized hydraulic retention time (HRT), especially with the MFC-MFC system achieving the highest voltage at a 1-day HRT.
  • - Analysis of microbial communities indicated that certain bacteria, particularly Proteobacteria, are critical in utilizing membrane foulants, highlighting the potential for MFC systems in energy recovery and foulant reuse.

Roles of the prostaglandin E2 E-prostanoid 4 receptor (EP4) on extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation induced by TGF-β1 in mouse glomerular mesangial cells (GMCs) remain unknown. Previously, we have identified that TGF-β1 stimulates the expression of FN and Col I in mouse GMCs. Here we asked whether stimulation of EP4 receptors would exacerbate renal fibrosis associated with enhanced glomerular ECM accumulation.
