With the rapid development of the LED industry, gallium (Ga)-bearing waste generated is regarded as one of the most hazardous as it typically contains heavy metals and combustible organics. Traditional technologies are characterized by long processing routes, complex metal separation processes and significant secondary pollution emission. In this study, we proposed an innovative and green strategy to selectively recovery Ga from Ga-bearing waste by using a quantitative phase-controlling transition process.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined the relationship between periodontitis and atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes, focusing on how glycemic control affects this association.
  • The analysis included 214 patients, and results indicated that poorer glycemic control was linked to a stronger relationship between periodontal issues and increased arterial thickness.
  • The findings suggest that maintaining good blood glucose levels may lessen the negative impact of periodontitis on arterial health.

High rates of ligament damage require replacements; however, current synthetic materials have issues with bone integration leading to implant failure. Here we introduce an artificial ligament that has the required mechanical properties and can integrate with the host bone and restore movement in animals. The ligament is assembled from aligned carbon nanotubes formed into hierarchical helical fibres bearing nanometre and micrometre channels.

While large language models (LLMs) have been successfully applied to various tasks, they still face challenges with hallucinations. Augmenting LLMs with domain-specific tools such as database utilities can facilitate easier and more precise access to specialized knowledge. In this paper, we present GeneGPT, a novel method for teaching LLMs to use the Web APIs of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) for answering genomics questions.

Genetically identical cells in the same stressful condition die at different times. The origin of this stochasticity is unclear; it may arise from different initial conditions that affect the time of demise, or from a stochastic damage accumulation mechanism that erases the initial conditions and instead amplifies noise to generate different lifespans. To address this requires measuring damage dynamics in individual cells over the lifespan, but this has rarely been achieved.

This study uses experimental methods, theoretical research, and numerical prediction to study the dynamic mechanical properties and damage evolution of CFRP laminates at ultra-low temperatures. Based on the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) device, we set up an ultra-low temperature dynamic experimental platform with a synchronous observation function; the dynamic mechanical properties of laminates were tested, and the damage evolution process was observed. The experimental results are as follows: The compression strength and modulus increase linearly with the increase in strain rate and show a quadratic function trend of increasing and then decreasing with the decrease in temperature.

Patients with early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit various but subtle motor symptoms, especially postural instability and gait disorders (PIGD). Patients show deteriorated gait performance at turns as the complex gait task requires more limb coordination and postural stability control, which may help to discriminate signs of early PIGD. In this study, we firstly proposed an IMU-based gait assessment model for quantifying comprehensive gait variables in both straight walking and turning tasks from five domains: respectively gait spatiotemporal parameters, joint kinematic parameters, variability, asymmetry, and stability.

Introduction: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PCC/PGL) are rare neuroendocrine tumors and can secrete catecholamine. Previous studies have found that SDHB immunohistochemistry (IHC) can predict SDHB germline gene mutation, and SDHB mutation is closely associated with tumor progression and metastasis. This study aimed to clarify the potential effect of SDHB IHC as a predictive marker for tumor progression in PCC/PGL patients.

There has been an explosion in the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) because of the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. In this study, we repurposed hexestrol (HXS) as an antibacterial agent to fight planktonic and biofilm-related MRSA infections. HXS is a nonsteroidal synthetic estrogen that targets estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ) and has been used as a hormonal antineoplastic agent.

With the advantages of discriminative correlation filter (DCF) in tracking accuracy and computational efficiency, the DCF-based methods have been widely used in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for target tracking. However, UAV tracking inevitably encounters various challenging scenarios, such as background clutter, similar target, partial/full occlusion, fast motion, etc. These challenges generally lead to multi-peak interferences in the response map that cause the target drift or even loss.

Core-needle biopsy (CNB) plays a vital role in the initial diagnosis of breast cancer. However, the complex tissue processing and global shortage of pathologists have hindered traditional histopathology from timely diagnosis on fresh biopsies. In this work, we developed a full digital platform by integrating label-free stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy with weakly-supervised learning for rapid and automated cancer diagnosis on un-labelled breast CNB.

The Togashi Kaneko model (TK model) is a simple stochastic reaction network that displays discreteness-induced transitions between meta-stable patterns. Here we study a constrained Langevin approximation (CLA) of this model. This CLA, derived under the classical scaling, is an obliquely reflected diffusion process on the positive orthant and hence respects the constraint that chemical concentrations are never negative.
