Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is attracting widespread attention as a promising strategy for tumor treatment. However, the efficacy of PDT is severely limited by the insufficient tissue penetration depth of the light source and low reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation efficiency. Herein, the metal doping strategy is reported to construct a series of defect-rich M-doped amorphous CoMo-layered double hydroxide (a-M-CoMo-LDH, M = Mn, Cu, Al, Ni, Mg, Zn) photosensitizers (PSs) for NIR-II PDT.

Bismuth oxychalcogenides (BiOX, X = S, Se, Te), a family of non-van der Waals (non-vdW) two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, are attracting significant attention due to their outstanding semiconducting properties and huge potential in various applications of electronic and optoelectronic devices. Surface imperfections (, surface vacancies) and surface reconstructions are more likely to appear and may cause intriguing physical properties and novel phenomena in the non-vdW 2D materials than the vdW cases. Here, we explore the impacts of surface vacancies and surface reconstructions on the properties of the surfaces and 2D structures of BiOX by using the first-principles method.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare dosimetric outcomes of vaginal brachytherapy using two methods: single-channel vaginal cylinder (SCVC) and free-hand interstitial needles (FIN) in treating gynecologic tumors after surgery and external beam radiation therapy.
  • - Out of 22 women treated, both methods achieved similar coverage of the high-risk clinical target volume (HR-CTV), but the FIN technique had better dose distribution and resulted in lower doses to critical organs like the rectum and bladder compared to SCVC.
  • - The findings suggest that the FIN technique is a more effective option for high-dose-rate vaginal brachytherapy in minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding organs while ensuring adequate treatment coverage.

  • The text discusses the growing importance of clustering high-dimensional predictors in fields like text mining and biology, highlighting the limitation of standard methods that don't predict response variables.
  • A new supervised weeding algorithm is proposed to improve clustering by iteratively removing unimportant predictors while optimizing prediction capabilities.
  • Monte Carlo simulations show that this method effectively competes with existing techniques that focus on either clustering or prediction alone, and an analysis of job descriptions illustrates its application in identifying key keywords influencing employee salaries.

Accurately assessing the health risks of cadmium (Cd) exposure in the soil-wheat system is of great importance for the formulation of regional health risk prevention measures. Based on regional large-scale survey and Monte Carlo simulation methods, a case study on the health risk of Cd exposure in a soil-wheat system in a wheat production area of North China Plain was conducted by constructing a comprehensive health risk assessment (CHRA) model. The results showed that 73% of the soil samples in the study area exceeded the screening value of Cd for farmland soil (GB 15618-2018) and 57.

Simulating the changes in ecosystem service value induced by land use changes in the peak cluster depression basin of southwestern Guangxi under multiple scenarios is of great importance for ensuring ecological security in the basin and enhancing regional ecosystem service value capabilities. Based on the CA-Logistic-Markov model, the land use of the study area was simulated under natural development, food security, and ecological protection scenarios in 2030. The ecosystem service value was calculated under each scenario using the equivalent factor correction model, and the spatiotemporal dynamic characteristics of the ecosystem service value in the peak cluster depression basin of southwestern Guangxi were quantitatively analyzed.

Background/purpose: Traditional restorative composites require time-consuming incremental layering techniques which poses challenges in pediatric dentistry. SonicFill bulk resin allows for thicker layers to be placed efficiently, reducing treatment time and enhancing filling quality. This prospective, parallel, randomized, controlled clinical study aimed to compare the operative time and outcomes between SonicFill bulk resin and conventional restorative composite for deep proximal restorations in primary molars.

Article Synopsis
  • The outpatient continuity clinic is vital for internal medicine residency training, and the Primary Care Exception Rule (PCER) allows indirect supervision of residents during less complex patient visits.
  • The existing literature on the effects of the PCER is limited, yet it raises questions about its impact on patients, residents, attending physicians, and health systems.
  • Recommendations include avoiding PCER for critical diagnosis situations, advocating for competency-based supervision, and expanding the PCER to cover moderate-complexity visits, along with a call for further research in this area.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an immune-related skin disease with a genetic background. Numerous loci have been identified associated with AD to better comprehend its complicated genetic mechanisms by genome‑wide association studies (GWASs). However, current studies reveal the underlying mechanisms of these loci in the pathogenesis of AD inadequately.

Incomplete tumor removal after microwave ablation (MWA), a widely used hyperthermia-based therapy, can result in tumor recurrence. Herein, attenuated Salmonella typhimurium VNP20009 is engineered to release interleukin-15&interleukin-15-receptor-alpha (IL-15&IL-15Rα) in response to mildly elevated temperature. Such 15&15R@VNP colonizes in tumors upon intravenous injection, and the expression of IL-15&IL-15Rα is triggered by MWA.

Altermagnetism (AM), a newly discovered magnetic state, ingeniously integrates the properties of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism, representing a significant breakthrough in the field of magnetic materials. Despite experimental verification of some typical AM materials, such as MnTe and MnTe_{2}, the pursuit of AM materials that feature larger spin splitting and higher transition temperature is still essential. Here, our research focuses on CrSb, which possesses Néel temperature of up to 700 K and giant spin splitting near the Fermi level (E_{F}).

Ricinus communis, a plant of significant industrial value for its oil, is renowned for its robust root system and vigorous growth, qualities that render it an exemplary candidate for the ecological remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals. The impact of heavy metal stress on root development is characterized by inhibition, a phenomenon whose underlying mechanisms are not fully elucidated. To shed light on this, a study was conducted wherein varying concentrations of the exogenous auxin, IBA, were applied to the roots of Ricinus communis to scrutinize its influence on the endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) metabolism in seedlings and to delineate the molecular underpinnings of its effects on root morphology.

Although the current nanozymes, such as FeO nanoparticles, exhibit biocatalytic activities, they dramatically differ from natural enzymes, lacking a degradable organic framework and an intrinsically flexible structure. Single-chain folding of a synthetic polypeptide by metal coordination can mimic metalloproteins more similarly.
