Background: Like sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), tangerine (Citrus reticulata) is another citrus crop grown widely throughout the world. However, whether it shares a common mechanism with sweet orange in forming a given mastication trait is still unclear. In this study, three 'Nanfeng' tangerine cultivars, 'Yangxiao-26' ('YX-26') with inferior mastication trait, elite 'YX-26' with moderate mastication trait and 'Miguang' ('MG') with superior mastication trait, were selected to investigate the formation mechanism of mastication trait.

Background: Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), or human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV8), is consistently identified in 2 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated lymphoproliferative disorders: primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) and multicentric Castleman disease. Rarely, KSHV/HHV8-positive extracavitary solid tissue lymphomas occur, often at extranodal sites, which are not associated with an effusion. These solid variants of PEL are similar morphologically, immunophenotypically, clinically and genetically to classic PEL.

We have previously reported that dauricine exerted antiarrhythmic effects on various experimental arrhythmias. To further clarify its mechanism, the effects of dauricine on action potential duration (APD), early afterdepolarizations (EADs), triangulation, which is defined as the repolarization time from APD at 30% level (APD30) to APD at 90% level (APD90), and L-type calcium current (I(Ca-L)) were studied using standard microelectrode techniques on rabbit papillary muscles and whole-cell patch clamp techniques on single myocytes isolated from rabbits by enzymatic digestion, respectively. Cardiac hypertrophy was induced by coarctating the abdominal aorta of rabbits.

A novel enhanced chemiluminescent (CL) immunoassay for ultrasensitive determination of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) was reported. The method made full use of 4-(4'-iodo)phenylphenol (IPP) as a new potential signal enhancer and double-codified gold nanoparticles (DC-AuNPs) labels modified with horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-conjugated anti-AFP used for further signal amplification. This protocol involved a sandwich format, in which the antigen in the sample was first captured by the immobilized primary antibody on the surface of magnetic beads, and then recognized by the second antibody labeled with DC-AuNPs.

Background: Preparing hyperthyroid patients for thyroid surgery with a combination of antithyroid drugs and thyroxine has long been controversial because this combination usually results in only partial inhibition of thyroid function. We therefore used large doses of antithyroid drugs to completely inhibit the synthesis of thyroxine and render the thyroid gland defunctionalized. We then administered physiologic doses of thyroxine to inhibit thyroid-stimulating hormone secretion.
